Hey guys im using a uth on all my tanks and don't ever see my snakes basking. Is it ok if I turn off the uth sometimes and use my 75w infrared bulb as a heat source. It never gets the hot side above 90 which is where I have the uth's set at anyway. I noticed when I was using the heat lamp before it seemed like the snakes were more active. Any thoughts?

If you want to try, go ahead. All that matters is that they get heat. They don't really need to go out and bask if they can soak up heat from a Uth(IMO). But I use both and I keep my Uth on 24 hrs.

The uth and heat lamp combined dont make it too hot DC? When I had the two on together my hot side was over 100.

I use a 50w bulb, so high temps aren't a problem for me, and I have a 29 gal tank, so the lamp is much higher up. My hot side during winter ranges 83-86f and 87-91 during summer.

Yep :p I think I'm going to slowly move Ammit to an all rat diet, because I don't find it necessary to feed 3-4 adult mice when you can feed 1 appropriatly sized rat. Plus, it will save freezer space:) also, its cheaper for me because the rat I got cost me 4$ and when I pic up three mice, it cost me almost 8

I tried, she got it half way down then spit it back up. I think it was probably too big, I'm going to try a smaller rat. It was about the size of 2 adult mice, which is what I feed her, but I think it was just too fat:/

Yeah Medusa can easily eat 2 xlarge mice per feeding. I was thinking about trying an appropriately sized rat. Ihave 3 snakes on xlarge mice.

El-Ziggy, what a coincidence! And we used to have a cat called Ziggy Stardust! When I say used to, what I mean is that we had a cat that would hang around our yard looking pathetic and begging for food, and having had no response to the fliers we posted around the neighborhood or the "found cat" ads we placed on craigslist, we assumed him to be a stray and took him in. He lived in our basement with outside access because we found out he had FIV (feline immune deficiency) and we didn't want to expose our other (indoor only) cats. Anyway, after about 4 months and around $800 in vets bills and other expenses, Ziggy went missing while we were away on vacation. After 2 weeks of virtually no sleep because we were so worried, and hours of trudging around the neighborhood searching for him and putting up posters, we finally found out he had returned to his real owners who live about half a mile away. Apparently he had moved out when they were away on vacation. He still comes back to visit from time to time and begs to be let in, but now we know better! :)

Good to see this thread is still going strong. A lot of forums have become pretty slow now with all the stuff going on on Facebook. I don't post often, but I do check here from time to time and enjoy seeing all the lampros posted. I took a photo of my king the other day to send to my friend and thought I'd share it here too. This is a 2012 f1 Yuma morph (Cal king). Parents were found and collected in Holtville CA, which is in Imperial county in the SE corner of the state. Yumas from this area can be very dark or have an extremely reduced pattern compared to other locales.

Thats awesome steve. Do u use 1 thermostat for the entire rack? I was looking at th economy rack from animal plastics but i would like to control th heat for each tub individually. However ive read 1 thermostat is enough. I just dont see how that can work since temperature inside the tub would be different then the outside temp on the rack. The economy rack i was looking at came with 1 long string of flexwatt tape. Again im having a hard time visualizing how 1 thermostat can provide adequet temps for all the tubs...

The racks you can get by with one tstat, because the tubs are all the same size. Each tub will usually be one or two degrees different.I think most place the temp probe under one tub and heat tape and adjust temps up or down from readings inside the tubs. I use separate hydrofarm tstats for each one of my enclosures.

Jon- I'm not totally sure about the Cal King. I bought him from Petsmart in Feb. 2013 and they didn't have accurate records. Judging by his size when I got him I would say he was hatched in late 2012. The MBK was hatched Apr. 17th, 2013. I got her in June 2013.

I feed all my snakes in their enclosures except my Black Pinesnake. The only reason I don't feed her in her enclosure is that she is like the Tasmanian devil when she eats and messes up her whole enclosure.

I would and probably will get a couple MBKs but I have to wait a bit. I have a couple of Guyana Yellowtail Cribos coming in a couple months.

My little baby king is a goofball, guys. About half the time I catch him out and about exploring, he's continually poking various parts of this one corner, as if he'll suddenly gain the ability to escape via osmosis.

Of course 75% of the time I have no idea where he is, because ??? digging baby snake.

Also, it's really hard to get good photos through glass...

I think the lady I got her from said that she is a tex mex kingsnake, but now that I've seen some of the snakes on this forum maybe she meant mex mex kingsnake. I don't know if that is what she actually is or not.

Recieved my new Eastern King Snake from Rowan County, North Carolina from Shane at ssuperiorsserpents. I had to work today so I talked my wife into unboxing her and introducing her to her new enclosure. She snapped some pics for me. Very impressed and satisfied with Shane's quality of snakes and customer service! Thanks Shane! I highly recommend him!I can't wait to get home to check her out!:D:D
