Can you tell us where the pic is from and are there more shots of this snake? I have seen them that long but never that thick.

Haha that's funny I found this pic almost a month ago and saved it to my phone. I've got a friend with some permits to own indigos his biggest is around 8 feet. I joke that it could eat my almost 3 year old jamp retic.

I´m long time friends with someone in the midwest who has been breeding easterns for decades. Actually, he was one of the first heavyweight keepers i met when i initially got into the hobby.

I´ve always wanted to see some of his indigos, but I never felt comfortable asking. A few years back him and I got to talking about them, and he happened to have some of his breeders on hand. I too was astonished at not only their size, but their temperament as well. I can´t say that I´ve ever been around a colubrid that is remotely like them.

That species has always been a "dream snake" of mine, and experiencing them first hand did nothing to lesson my desire to some day own a few.

Could you elaborate on this?

it is difficult for me to articulate, but they have a way about them that seems more deliberate than reactive...but at the same time come off as being very relaxed. i had read about indigo´s having a "presence" before, and kind of dismissed it off-hand; but after being exposed to a few specimens...i guess i would have to agree.

i could type pages about it, but ultimately would provide far less insight than someone would gain on their own in 5 minutes time around their first indigo.

Do you think they're more intelligent than other snakes?

without a shadow of a doubt.

I have heard a few breeders in their youtube videos refer to them as the most intelligent snake period and many also believe they enjoy handling in some sort of way. I have only ever held a small young indigo but there is definitely a difference in the way they act. No fear of the handler and this one seemed to recognize the owner. There was a member here a while back had a beautiful indigo named Jack. His pics were always great. Unfortunately these are out of my price range in Canada.

Ugh thanks Mikoh. I keep taking this species off my list due to the possible paperwork and cost. But every time I see one, it goes back on the list. I found the permit and read through it to see what I'm up against if I can't find one local. Decided this will be a future acquisition, regardless of hoop jumping and arm/leg selling I'll have to do. :D

Haha so I've read. It's worth it for one of those beauties. Heard of any success using bioactive substrates with these guys?

Nope but I reckon it will work for just about any species(except for desert ones)
