View Full Version : Diablo's Enclosure and Question

EDIT; I apologize, I realize now that this is probably in the incorrect spot.
This is Diablo's my 6-7 month old Spotty enclosure. Its a 40B which I understand is a tad large for him but I'm told he should be okay as long as he has lots of hides to hide in and toys to keep him busy which as you can see he does.
(Please disregard the analog gauges, I have digital thermostats on both his warm and cool side with probes and thermostats, the analog ones have just never been removed for some reason)
So here is my question, Its obviously okay for him now but once he grows to his adult size (whatever that is) what do I use for hides? I'm assuming I should remove the present ones as he wont be able to fit in them.
What do you use for hides for your adults?

Nice setup Frogman. What did you cover the sides and back of the tank with? I wish I could get my tank to look that nice :). My buddy Steve recommended the Exo Terra reptile caves, they're pretty nice and they come in larger sizes.

Thanks, b I assume he will out grow this shortly, they are simple floor tiles (rock looking) that I got at Home Depot for .99 each I tapped them in place from the outside.
Diablo uses every single thing in his house, at night he is all over the place.

Nice, I may have to follow suit on the floor tile idea. Did you just tape them to the tank with double sided tape or something? I need to add some branches to my tanks as well. Thanks for sharing.

No, I measured and cut them to fit, I then taped them all together with clear packing tape on the back side of the tile, then I placed against the outside of the glass and tapped them to the glass with the same clear packing tape from the outside. (just around the edges)
easy peazy !!!

Thank but my intent was not to show off Diablos house because there are so many nicer ones out there, but rather to ask a question about what do I do when he grows and gets bigger, do I remove everything?

For some species, I've seen some people not offer any hides once the snake is big enough, they don't have any natural predators so they will be more in the open, but reptile basics have very large plastic hides, cheap too. They aren't pretty but they get the job done! I have small ones for both my snakes and they are always there.

Fancy Stuff??
A lot of this I have found in the woods, brought home, washed in Bleach Solution and baked it in he oven to kill any possible bugs, Ive also used a Closet Rod that I velcro'ed in which was like $7.
I also shop at Goodwill twice a week and If I see something I buy it and just throw it in a box until I need it, Ive found some amazing stuff including tanks at Goodwill for cheap, cheap, cheap.

Yeh, I buy some stuff but I live in the mountains so the free resources are there, If its Free its for Me !
The reason I have so much stuff in his enclosure is because the tank is actually too big for him so I wanted to make sure he had pleanty of stuff to hide in should he feel insecure.
But I tend to go overboard, I have 8 Frog Tanks that are through he roof. LOL

Spotters stay small. You should have a rather wide veriety of appropriate sized hides at your local pet stores. As for the no hides suggestion; I've only seen this with large species, and arborials. But I'd still provide plenty of cover for arborials.

I didn't know what size they get to. Assumed bigger before smaller! :) but they have big hides available you just have to look! :)

Spotteds, not spotters like my last post(stupid iPhone autocorrect), typically stay under 4 feet, and are slender bodied. A lot of python personality in a tiny package.
