View Full Version : Oh siblings- feeding question
I have recently started my first year in college; since I am no longer home often enough to feed my two corn snakes weekly, I put their feeding in the control of my younger brother.
Well for some reason he was unable to feed them today, so he handed the task over to my sister. Unfortunately, he forgot to show her how to feed them. I just got a call from my sister double checking that it was ok to feed them frozen frozen mice (no dethaw). I told her of course not, but it was too late as one of the two snakes had already started eating.
This is probably bad right? What will happen? What should I do?

Make sure your heat is up and hope it doesn't throw it up.

If that snake actually ate a frozen mouse it is probably as good as dead.

Alright, thank you. Heat is up so I'm hoping for the best.

Thank you, that was very helpful.

I responded to your last line. I have a hard time believing that a snake woyld eat a frozen rat.

I'm also having a hard time believing the rat was frozen solid.

ACK . . . .
I have to agree with lady_bug87 that a snake will not eat a frozen mouse. I wanna hear the out come of this.

That's good know. Not that I would ever feed one to any of mine.

I've wondered if anyone's ever done that before. Are the snakes ok? I wouldn't think it'd kill them.

Think it through. An ecotherm has an ice cube sitting in its stomach.

Corn snakes are pretty hardy snakes, I'd imagine the snakes temperature would drop a few degrees, depending on the size of snake and the size of the mouse, but would that be enough to kill it?

I think a snake would go into thermal shock if it swallowed a frozen mouse.

A few degrees? Seriously? The snake has no way to warm itself up except by whatever the ambient temps and the hot spot is. The mouse is going to take a while to thaw out.

I just realized that Captain America was the only one who gave her any advice. I hope the snake comes out of this ok. Good luck.

Probably because he was the first one to comment and there isn't really much you can do but heat him up and pray.

What kind of advice are we supposed to give? Damage is done. If it ate it, it will either regurge it and maybe die, keep it down and maybe die or it could spit it out
I'm really not sure what we can tell them...

I'm not calling anyone out here, I didn't offer anything useful either. In hindsight, maybe soak it in warm water. I don't know what, if anything, could have helped. I'd like to know if the snakes ok.

This is actually a really good idea, Soak it for a while...

yeah i want to know how the snake does, too. we all do i am sure. just curious, would it be better if it did regurgitate it? or this also pretty horrible? i am a bit mad at the sis for feeding w/o getting an answer first. grrrr.

*Violently waiting for an update*
I have kept snakes for the majority of my life. I'm not saying I am any kind of expert but if I had to guess on a outcome I would say he will regurgitate the meal before letting it kill him. The fact that a snake will swallow a frozen mouse doesn't surprise me I've had Hondurans start to swallow themselves.
Sorry for not updating you guys right away. I was able to come home for Thanksgiving and see the snake for myself. He doesn't look or act any differently so I think he's going to be ok. I'll have to make sure to show my sister how to properly feed the snakes so this doesn't happen again.
Thank you for the help! I can post more updates if you'd like later.

Great to here. :)
You may want to have a look around the cage and see if he regurgitated anywhere.
I tent think that the mouse may not have been as frozen as your sister let on.
Again, great to hear everything looks good. :)
