(warning- contains monitor murder)
Does anybody else find this disturbing? This guy goes around the world killing animals which he supposedly eats. However, I contend that in fact, he and his film crew have a LOT of sandwiches with them. And coffee. I think the way this guy kills animals is totally unnecessary and sends the wrong message to people out there. The killing of animals- especially for questionable purposes, should not happen at all, and most definitely should not be televised.

Isn't it? If you read the comments there are a few people complaining about the cruelty but "the masses" seem to think that since humans are further up the food chain, we can do whatever we want. :hmm:
There's another episode of his TV show where he beats a snake to death with a stick. I don't remember which species but it was a large boa or python.

I hear the new fixed blade is better quality than the previous. I'm going to buy one just as a collectors item... and maybe do a few functionality tests.

We are the apex of the food chain and can do what we please. Doesn't make it right though.

It's a bit grotesque to watch. By the same token, I'm not sure if I find it that wrong. It seemed like he killed it pretty swiftly. It also seems a bit silly to call it unnecessary when most of us feed our pets other animals. Sure, Grylls doesn't NEED to kill and eat a monitor lizard, but we don't NEED to own carnivorous reptiles which create a demand for feeder rodents, which are then killed and fed to our pets.

But what I'm driving at here is that Bear Grylls' killings are unnecessary. He and his crew undoubtedly bring sandwiches with them. Do you really think a camera crew is going to eat monitor lizard cooked over a camp fire? Of course not. If they have sandwiches, he has them too.
It's unnecessary killing, for the sake of killing. And he's televising it, encouraging impressionable youth to go out and kill reptiles in their own backyard/ neighborhood.

I think he's trying to say that is what/how you should eat when you are in a survival situation(stranded in the middle of no where).
Dumb people will be encouraged by anything. The content doesn't really matter. It's how you take it.

This discussion inhabits a moral grey area. I think the majority of us have wasted food at one point or another. Supermarkets are filled with meat that passes a certain date and has to be thrown away. It wasn't necessary for those animals to be killed...
At the same time, many people who have been stuck in survival situations have pointed to shows like Man vs Wild and Survivor Man as what helped them to survive. Will Bear Grylls killing a monitor help somebody in one of those situations? I don't know, but it's not something I would automatically rule out.
And from my own personal experience, the kinds of kids that will go out and kill animals in their back yard don't need encouragement from anybody. I don't see this sort of stunt causing kids to kill reptiles when they otherwise wouldn't.

the guys an arsehole.....
it was recently in the newspapers over here, that he was being flown out to hotels by helicopter,or sleeping in motor homes, after his filming was done impling he roughed it through the night.....
also the fact he picks up a snake, kills it just so he can take 1 bite out it,then throw it away pisses me off...
the guys a feckin tit...!!
cheers shaun
As word from his produser "not me but friend of my room mate"there are no sandwiches and he only gets pulled out if the weather is really bad to stay In a hotel. He is an ex special ops and he dose eat what he kills. As for the media they print what sells papers.

He only simulates survival situations and demonstrates survival skills. As far as I know if they show him sleeping outdoors he is but every other night they are back at the hotel. If you want to watch someone survive out in the wilderness watch Survivorman. I'm more impressed by the crew, they have to go everywhere he does but with gear.

Maybe they'd catch him in waist deep water, slam his head against a tree then stab him in the neck. Just like that poor monitor.

We are the apex....unless you go for a swim off the coast of South Africa.
Then we are just white shark bait. :)
That's a massive mouth full of razors driven by 15+ foot of muscle. This picture creeps me out a little.

The intelligence to use weapons makes us apex.
Even Neanderthal used tools to bring down large animals.
Unlike Grylls, Neanderthal man had to take down animals, they had no choppers and buffet tables "off set" and they didn't waste anything.
We are evolving backward.
I haven't seen a lot of his shows so I can't/won't judge him on those but his autobiography was a good read and he has achieved a lot in his life.
Shaun, yes he is ex SAS he was in the SAS reserves before he had his accident.

I remember reading somewhere he was SAS for 6 minute.
(Not very long at all...just a few years if I remember)
I did a quick google search, but I dont care enough about him to spend the time.

1/2 the advice in his show would get you killed if you were stranded. Run around like a nut case, trust a single vine with your life, go sliding down cliffs. I don't think anyone buys it really anyway.
The fact he kills animals then goes back to a camp or hotel to eat makes him a douche.

SurvivorMan was a great show; Les actually went out on his own and legitimately depended on what he did for survival. There was once he was given a gun and some fat, but that was the most he ever got for assistance. He never even had a camera crew; he did all the camera work himself. THAT is an educational show.
But Bear Grylls' show is purely for entertainment, and many of the things he does are sickening and totally unnecessary. He once carved out a camel to show how to turn it into shelter in an emergency situation, then informed the audience that he was headed to a hotel. Why did that camel have to be killed and mutilated, then? He could have just talked about it! He does quite a lot of idiotic things that people shouldn't do in a survival situation as well. For example, he once ate a bug and said "I'm not sure if this is poisonous, but if it isn't it will give me the protein I need!" and another time he was exploring a chasm in a glacier and said "This space can suddenly flood with icy cold water at any moment and kill me!"....there is little to no educational value to his show. I can't stand it.
By the sounds of things I don't think I shouldn't watch his shows if all it is is sensationalized so called survival.

Chris Ryan's bravo two zero book (I can't remember what it is called) was a really good read and he is certainly one double hard bas**rd. The things all of those guys on that patrol went through is frightening and fascinating. Chris' and Andy McNabbs books about this are both certainly worth a read.

as far as i remember Chris Ryans walk out of the country after the bravo 2 zero mission was comprimised, was a record for the SAS,now thats one hard ba*tard...!!
but imo even Chris Ryan would'nt go for a drink in Hereford, the serving members don't like all the tv programes and books thats been done

The books are good and very realistic apparently. I regularly go for a coffee with an ex SAS man, he is well in his eighties and hard as nails still. He reminds me of my grandpa so we are quite close andnhe shares a lot of his experiences.
And shauny is right, the SAS guys are not happy about the money made out of the books and films, they see themselves as brothers for life and dont think things like taht should be exploited.

i know i can't even watch it, so i won't.
i agree, it is not necessary most likely. if it is for pure survival, i understand b/c it's to live. and you are thankful for the sacrifice. but just for entertainment? sick.

Does it mean that though? Most GWS attacks happen with no prior warning of an attack coming. In the case of randy fry his dive buddy even specifically said he could have had an ak 47, a bazooka, it didn't matter. Wouldn't have helped.
