We have to put our Tug to sleep.

We adopted him one year ago from a private shelter. He is anywhere from 15 to ???? No teeth, blind in one eye and other eye is going, arthritis, and a large amount of dementia, paranoia, and general nutty-ness. He sleeps a solid 20-24 hours per day. Although he still has energy and even plays ball (once a month maybe), the bad times out weigh the good and its selfish to make him go through anymore. I just wanted to post some pictures of Tug and let people know that sometimes the dog is ready before we are.

I must say I am sad, very sad. But not in the way I expected. I will mostly be sad about him not doing the cute things he used to. But when the last 5 months of your dogs life consist of him attacking non-exsisting foes, biting me and everyone else sometimes (with his no teeth!) and going to the bathroom on the floor every hour...its more a relief for me and for him I think than a terribly sad thing, I know that sounds insensitve but I don't mean it that way. I thank you all for your kind replies and they will help me when he goes into tomorrow morning.

I hope more people will start getting their dogs from local SPCA and other sources instead of going for that cute puppy everytime. They have some amazing older dogs that just need a stable loving home. Not to mention you are adopting a dog who is fully vaccinated, fixed and in some cases microchipped all for the meager adoption fee! Far "cheaper" than buying from a breeder or pet store.

If I had more energy and rescources I would be adopting another older dog right away. A couple of the branches have some wonderful older dogs, and even a beautiful blind white shepherd looking dog. Anyways maybe someone will follow the link and find the special older (or any!) dog they can help out.

I am trulyy sorry for your loss. I bet you made the last year of his life very happy. You gave him a second chance and if it wasnt for you he would probably not have enjoyed his last year of life. It is nice to see people adopting older dogs.

i am very sorry you have to go through this, i know what it is like losing a loved one .... i lost my BP last month (romeo) but all i got was blasted from most of the people who posted because of a mistake on my behalf ....but i know what your going through ,so hang in ther and take care ...he is in good hands now ...

I'm sorry you're losing your tug, he looks happy in his photos.

Getting a dog from the spca or humane society is the best thing you can do for a dog. We got Lexx from the humane society and he's been the best dog we've ever owned. He's getting grey in the muzzle now and a little slower, but I enjoy every day with him.

You can see his little tiny nubs of leftover teeth in the first photo! ah that one always makes me laugh. :)

Very sorry to hear it...I know how hard it is because I went through the same thing back in December with the cat I grew up with. She was 19 soon to be 20 when we finally couldn't watch her suffering anymore.
