Beautiful snake. The red is just so vibrant!
thank you guys... this evening when i came home from work i took a look his tank and i see him hanging out by the grass. could this mean he is getting comfortable or was he looking for food? since i got him i have never seen him out in the open like that :suspicious: its monday so it was feeding time... he ate about an hr ago with no issues. he actually ate it within seconds after he smelled the small fuzzy :)

That's a beautiful milk! Love the colors and how clean he is! Amazing snake!
Thanks guys!
looks like snakeweed is getting ready to shed :) he was extremely gentle and calm when i picked him up (i thought he was going to fight me and try to get away). I offered him a small fuzzy and he ate it. I had to put it right on his nose for him to take it. hopefully by the time he sheds the meal will be fully digested. his whole belly is hazey but his eyes arent blue yet. cant wait for his first shed with me

looks like this heat is drying up all the humidity. my lil guy was poking his head out of the aspen this morning when i woke up so i decided to check up on him. His eyes were blue thursday morning when i checked him and he's been in a deep hide and super inactive. Well, it looked like he was able to take off the head part of the old skin and thats about it. i soaked in warm water this morning for about 3 mins (i had to go to work) so hopefully that helps. the heat has been cranking at my house and rightfully so as its been 20 degrees over the last few days.
will he be able to shed today? im guessing hes going to try again later as he still has the entire skin to take off minus the head...

Put some moistened spagnum moss in hide. I do this for all my snakes in their warm hides.
Thanks for the reply :)
Put the moss inside the hide on the warm side? Will he keep trying to shed? I hope he can take off whats left.

My snakes tend to use the warm hides more when in shed. You could put the moss in all hides. Just make sure the hide that's being used more frequently has moss.
I put him in a plastic container with warm wet paper towels and he was able to shed. I also lowered the temp to around 82. I had it on the high side on 89. I usually feed him on mondays, should i wait till tomorrow? Or see if he will take it?
Thanks for your help Steve #thumbsup

I would wait until tomorrow to let him recover a bit after the molt. It's a good idea not to handle your snake for a day before feeding unless it doesn't stop them from feeding after they adapt.

i offered him a fuzzie and left him alone for about 45mins. When i checked on him he was half way done so i let him be and put him back in his cage after he was done. Lesson learned. Ill keep his temps in the lower 80's and cover the screen and add some moist paper towels when he sheds again. thanks for your help once again. here he is stuffed and looking glossy :)

Sup? I don't have a hot side for my black milk. They like it cool. He gets room temperature which is now around 73.if it's real cold at night I do turn on a 60 watt infrared light that keeps one end of his huge 10g tank around 80 degrees. I keep my other two kings and corn's hot side around 85 and cool side low 70's.

I think it depends on what kind of milk/king it is. (Honduran, Mexican, pueblan, etc.)
here is my mexican black king :) hopefully the spots go away as she gets older and it looks like she rubbed her nose trying to get out while she was shipped. the male i originally wanted did not work out but regardless im happy. she is definitely more docile than my milk snake ;)
you can definitely see the spots more with the camera's flash but i love how the blue shines with the flash aswell :D

Does anyone else think my mbk is a mbk/black milk cross? I emailed the seller and he said she was 100% but i have my doubts. He said the spots will go away 99% of the time and if shes crossed with a black milk i can see why hes so confident the spots will go away.

I've seen lots of pictures of jevenile mbks with banding that goes away as they get older. If the seller owns black milks I guess its a possibility, but I wouldn't say it is guaranteed.
Just something to think about, Op: as you add to your collection, which I'm sure you will, make every effort to quarantine your snakes for at least 3 months before putting them in the same room. This means separate rooms, separate cage furnitire, feeding tongs, everything. It would be devastating if a new snake were to bring a pathigen into your collection, or if an older one gave something to new, higher end animal (since many ofnus twnd to 'trade up' as we add to our collections.).
Your snakes are very beautiful, it will be great to see them grow up.

my 4yo named "her" ratking lol. i was expecting a male, but there were some issues with that order so i ended up with a female. so ratking it is lol

thank you starbuck. i have done my due diligence this time around to make sure i keep them as long as possible. i was not successfull with my first 2 corns i owned but i knew nothing about snakes. i spent a good 2 years reading and just waiting till i was ready to own another. i read about quarantining them and to be honest i was so excited that i didnt think about it. i did leave her in a tub for an hr to check for mites but that was it. definitely worth noting if i ever get another. thanks :)
is it normal for them to go to their humid hide after eating? i fed my milk snake in his enclosure last nite (good advise steve) since he was being picky about eating when the king snake arrived. he ate the fuzzy without issues and 15 mins later i see him in his humid hide  is this normal? the ambient temp was 75 and his hot spot was at its normal temp between 88-90..
thanks guys!!

Your milk is probably more used to his environment, while the mbk is still.exploring and figuring out where everything is. My kings are faorly active though, at all times of day.
Additionally (this is only heresay, idk if there is proof) I have heard of other snakes acting more 'nervous' if kings are present, as they can smell the kingsnale and recognize that it is a predator, regardless of size. That being said, milks are in the lampropeltis group as well and caan amd will eat other snakes so.... my corns and kings and rosy boa are all in the same.room and I.don't have any.problems (after a 6month quarantine)

i was wondering if my milk is stressed. ever since i got my king snake he has been musking me ALL THE TIME. he was doing good until i got her. actually this was the first weekend since i got her that he didnt musk me. he has been a real picky eater ever since she came also. maybe there is some truth to that. i hope he gets used to it. what i do now, is if im going to hold any of them, ill hold him first, because she can care LESS. she is definitely a one calm king. she only musked me once while i was taking her out of the box when she was first shipped. other than that, she never tries to flee or bite me or anything. shes enjoys being out. my milk on the other hand -.-
anywho, i tried feeding both (mondays is usually feed time) and both refused to eat. i did upgrade their fuzzies last time so maybe they are still full. i dont see any lumps so maybe they are just on a break.
here is king. shes in blue

i mentioned the scales on her nose to the seller when i first got her. he said she might have been rubbing her nose on the plastic tub when she was being shipped. i hope thats true and hopefully she clears up after a few sheds.
i noticed there was a little bug walking on my mbk and i decided to take some pictures. this thing definately looks like a mite. i last week i picked her up and saw something crawling and didnt think much of it and now i see this again. i should of quarantined her when i got her. i kept her in a container for an hr when i first got her to see if there was anything on her and i didnt see anything on her. i never had an issue with mites until i got my mbk.
i got this snake from ryan beatty from kingsnake.com and it has been nothing but a headache. im so pissed off. i originally bought a male mbk from him. i specifically asked for ALL black king with no pattern and no white. he said he had one male left that was all black. i told him the temperature was in the 30s here in new york so be sure to add a heat pack. he ends up putting 2 heat packs in the box and drops off my snake too late at fedex and missed the last overnight pick up. i tell him the next day the tracking info has not changed since and the snake never came to my house. he calls me and tells me the snake died in the fedex facility. he offers another male snake but tells it has pattern. i said no. i didnt not want a mbk with pattern. he tells me he has a female thats all black. i said ok, please ship her as i didnt care much about he sex, as long as it was all black.
u guys can see the pictures that ive posted and shes clearly no ALL black which i repeatedly told him i didnt want any pattern or white marks. now i have mites. this is the second mite ive seen on her.
how do you guys recommend i treat her? this just pisses me off man. im never buying another snake from that guy again. he said he had a x amount of years in this business with a good reputation and i find that really hard to believe right now...

it does look like that could be a mite, but without clear magnification we can't be 100% sure. It could be a dust mite, mite from a dog or cat (if you have any) etc… HOWEVER i would recommend starting a course of mite treatment for BOTH your snakes and their enclosures (look on this forum for more tips on this…).
I will also say that from what i have seen, many MBKs grow out of their pattern and end up as solid black adults.

Hey, I saw that someone on this thread bought a snake from Ryan Beatty. I'm looking at a CA king from him. Can anyone tell me how he was to work with, how were his shipping practices, was the animal in good shape, etc. You can send a PM. Thanks.

Maybe someone will share some reputuble king breeders. 3 of us on the forums ordered black milks from Isis reptiles. Highly recommend them. But I don't know if they have any kings available.

to keep things simple, i asked for an all black king snake and i received one with a few spots. is it a big deal? probly not, but i am meticulous with details. having said that, the snake came with a scab on her nose (i was told it was from her trying to escape) and possibly mites. i found a few mites in her tank. take from that what you will. she is doing fine now :)

A quick update on the purchase of my 50/50 cali king from Ryan Beatty. All went well, the little guy is in great shape and has eaten for me three times now with no problems. No mites or any other issues that I can see. The purchase itself was fine, plenty of communication; he had to use a different carrier than originally planned but we worked it out with no troubles. All in all a good experience and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.

thanks guys. im really glad ratking is back. i felt like **** when i saw she wasnt in her tank. im pretty sure she got through where the temperature cable feeds through the tank. i taped that corner up good inside and outside and all 4 corners. i hope to keep both of them for years to come. i love them both :)
hey guys i have a question. is there that you guys do to keep your snakes cool? the heat is starting to settle in now and my room has been as high as 85deg. i noticed both of them were in their moist hide. my king snake has been in her moist hide for most of the day over the past two days. any thoughts?

I keep our ac themostat set on 72 and use a fan and their cool sides stay about 74 but it's a large front room in the front of house not close to any ac vents. A fan would help I would think.
Thanks steve
I put the ac in my room and leave it on low so it stays at 75 throughout the day when im not home. Ratking had me concerned because she spent 2 days in her moist hide. She shed yesterday. Looks like she never missed a beat :)

That's great! They are surprisingly resilient animals! Post more pics when you get a chance!

I will. I was going to yesterday. I checked on her but she was cranky (probably because she was ready to shed) and her belly still had a lump from that huge meal i gave her when i found her, so i left her alone haha. Ill take her out in a few days and get better pics :D
What is the next sized meal after crawlers? They look too small for snakeweed now. I saw he was out lasrnight when i came home. He is never out unless he is hungry and i just fed him 5 days ago lol

If I could see a recent pic that would help. Probably weanlings or small adult mice. Just guessing until I can see your snake.
Just gave snakeweed another crawler and he took it no problems. Crazy how a lil warm weather gets their appetite moving :)
He got picky during the winter and when i introduced ratking into the same room. I love when they eat and shed :D

Lookin good! That looks like about the right sized prey for awhile. you could probably move up a size soon.
Thanks steve! The mice are about 1.5" (not including the tail). Shes less than 1.5ft long. Snakeweed is about 1.5ft but a little thicker than ratking. I wanted to upgrade his meals also or feed him every 3-5 days, but i rather go bigger and stick to every 5 days. They have been eating everything i throw at them since it got warm. Snakeweed shed last month and ratking shed this month. Hopefuly they go on a growth spurt this summer :)

snakeweed took his second hopper like a champ and ratking ate 2 fuzzies. i think i may switch her over to hoppers sometime next month. i think i will feed her 2 fuzzies this month when its feeding time and switch her to hoppers in august. its weird that snakeweed has never contricted any meal and she never did either before i lost her. she must have learned a few tricks when she was loose :) she wraps her meals now before eating. its awesome. i always wanted a constrictor and she is the one lol

She's really pretty, looks so sleek, I like your dog too! :) Just wanna say sheds aren't really the greatest way to measure them, since they tend to get stretched out in the process.. My snakes only 33" but his sheds are always at least 3', maybe a few inches over.. Here's a good site to measure them with: Serpwidgets - Snake Measurer (http://serpwidgets.com/main/measure)
hey thank you didnt know there was a program to measure. im going to check it out. here she is all excited
