Not even close to the deadliest species but nonetheless still venomous.
Crap picture, but I didn't want to disturb him as I just got the little guy.

The venom is harmless to some, harmful to others. The most extreme case I've heard of was necrosis with extreme pain going up the arm, but most people just get localized swelling. They're rear fanged with the venom equivalent of a Timber Rattlesnake but they only inject 1/10th of what a Timber does and have poor delivery systems.
When I asked Al or Viperkeeper his opinion on them he said he considers them hots and should still be handled with caution, but these guys are often free handled.

They are colubrids, related to ratsnakes and such. They're rear fanged so they have to get a good bite/chew to get their venom in. Their toxicity varies from person to person. Some people it's nothing some get lots of swelling/pain/nausea/skin discoloring. Keep in mind hognoses are also venomous.

Thanks. I am not familiar with FWC's at all so I had no clue. I did know that Hoggies are venomous, and rear fanged as well. Thanks for the info!

Hognose venom is literally nothing compared to a FWC though, falsies can put you in a lot of pain if they get a good chew in. Like I said the venom is equivalent to one of the hottest rattlesnakes, it's just hard to deliver.

Scary to think he'll be around 5 feet in a couple years.

They're really not that dangerous, I would just recommend getting a nice cage from a place like proline or boaphile that have locks installed.
I'll make sure to keep updates though!

Nice snake. HOTS are HOTS and all HOTS should be treat as such. Free handling any HOT snake is the sign of an inexperienced or careless handler. If that snakes gets a good chewing bite on you, you might not be around to make a thread about it. Don't follow the careless examples of others who over look safety handling procedures.

viperkeeper had told me that these are indeed hots, but everything I've ever seen has shown free handling and never a bad bite. I guess I should start getting experienced in handling my fwc as a hot though.

Compared to a gun, a FWC maybe only a 22 cal. and not a 357 Magnum, but it still has the potential to kill you.

Where can I learn on handling hots? I know it sounds ignorant I bought a FWC without any experience on venomous but everywhere I see with them they are handled like any other colubrid. I don't plan on owning any front fanged venomous, but I don't want to risk any serious damage to myself.

The best way to learn to handle HOTs is to find a experienced HOT keeper in your area and have him or her mentor you. Venom no matter how mild, can kill you. It effect each person differently and you will not know how it effects you until you get bit. Many people who have HOTs never really had any training on how to properly handle them. They learned from watching others on You Tube or TV. That is why it is so important when you handle snakes that you do it correctly. Because others may be watching you and think you are experience and handle them the same way. We are examples to others, even if we don't want to be.

I live in a pretty big hotspot for reptiles in my area so I'll have to look around. Definitely don't want to encourage anything that shouldn't be done.

well right now I am in a 2 bedroom mobile home with cats, and a 10 year old. Before I get my FWC I want to have a room to put them in so he cannot just get to them (nor the cats) - that is for his safety and my cats. I know my FWC won't be as dangerous as the Green Tree Pit Viper I plan on getting when I graduate college with my zoology/herpetology degree.

I don't have much experience with hots but I have a question. Does this cobra have the hood like other species? I know this is a terrible question lol.

Yes they do have the "hoods". Not sure how often they display it though and if they display the same as other cobras.

They hood up, but don't display their hood in a vertical position, they display it horizontally.
