No Erik, that's not a Varanus komodoensis, it is an Australian perentie Varanus giganteus

Bazinga.

Where the Komodo is the king of all living lizards, Komodoensis would be the bulldozer version, giganteus would be the Ferrari version. sleek, fast and that paint job is amazing.

Keeping one as a captive is something I think should never be an option.

Varanus tristis.. outrun a snake with an IQ & legs. :) I bet he eats whatever he wants.

The bio mechanics of Varanidae is optimized for maximum forward thrust, climbing & swimming, one of natures most perfect machines. They have distinctive hands and feet with the Prehensility of a primate, almost an equivalent cognitive function (they think and problem solve) and come with a built in turbo charger for oxygen delivery providing endurance. That should qualify for world's coolest. ;)

I personally would never buy one. They're amazing animals but they die very easy in captivity. Someone in Europe has been able to keep his alive on a diet of Pure White Tree Frogs, but no one else has been able to keep theirs alive, as far as I know. If you did buy one, you'd pretty much be paying for a snake that's almost certain to arrive dead, or die shortly after arriving.

This is also a valid point.. For the record I would not make an impulse decision as I may have made it seem like I would..

One can dream though! Would be a very cool guy to have in a collection considering the rarity.. not to mention it looks like a rat snake and an alligator made some regretful decisions one night ;)

I wasn't saying that you would, I'm just saying that you'll probably be paying a LOT of money to buy a very very fragile snake, that arrives dead 50% of the time. And the whole rat snake and alligator comment... That's gold! LOL!

Give it 10 years or so... I'm sure that eventually someone will keep them alive and actually breed them, and that one clutch will turn into two, we'll learn better ways to keep them alive, the second clutch will turn into another one, etc, etc.. Hopefully that'll happen because Dragon snakes are super cool and it would be really awesome to own one at some point!

Agreed ^^

There really is very little known on the care required, and it would be nice to figure it out but not at the expense of those lost in the process. Observation in the natural habitat would be the best practice, and then to apply this to a few specimens in captivity to see how they adapt under a controlled enviroment designed to mimic their natural one.

Anyone want to take a trip to Thailand???

Let's go! Lol... You're paying ;)

even in the wild, they're hardly seen, though. I have read that they live in higher elevations, and have survived in captivity on a strict diet on Pure White Tree Frogs. So there's a start

I wouldn't count on it. Boelen's pythons have been in captivity for 20 yrs or so, but we still haven't unlocked the secret for breeding with them. The hobby is so focused on the next big money-making mutation for BPs, corns, or geckos or whatever...that's why all this other stuff gets shoved aside. Not enough interest.

Well I would willing to pay a lot more for a normal Boelens than I would for the next thing in royals. This is one snake I would love to see grow in popularity.
