Just remember that using a hook to pull out a snake really isn't a solution. the solution should be getting your snake used to YOU. And a snake hook doesn't produce heat like you, and it doesn't smell like you either. So you should only use the hook until you think he's calm enough to pick up with your hands. this is just my opinion.

I somewhat disagree.
Taking a snake out with a hook is less stressful for the snake because of the heat signature/smell point you made. Once the snake is out you can place the snake on you and start handling it that way. It's a less stressful interaction than going in there and grabbing the snake.
As I mentioned before in another thread, using a hook to handle my snakes helped tons in taming down otherwise aggressive snakes of mine.

Well I have to say when I picked him up with the "hook" he was way more calmer than he had ever been when I used my hand he never acted out before but was always a little tense and today he wasnt tense and as soon as he was out I put him into my other hand and it worked great

That's why I said I'd only use one until my snake was calm enough to get out with my hand :p

Guess I misread that. I thought you said use a hook only when your snake is calm enough to get out with your hand.

so funny how snakes can have such different temperments. the ball python i had would NEVER strike or act in any way agressive unless he saw/smelled a rat being dangled to him. it was funny also to compare his weak, little strikes to the boas who get so angry with their feeding responses sometimes lol.

Well Bo was real sweet to and then I made a mistake got bit and I guess because my whole family was in the room freaking out he must have got freaked out himself so he was reall aggressive for about fiv3 days today he seems much better keeping my fingers crossed

if anything just give him a few days in between handlings. sometimes i feel bad that i only take my snakes out once or twice a week, but when i have them out they just want to get away and find somewhere to wedge themselves in and hide anyway, so i might as well just let them hang out in their vivs. lol

Yeah I take him out almost every day for atleast 20 min unless he is shedding and I was moving him into another feeding box and it was moving him from that box I got tagged it was my fault I was paying more attention to my 2 year old and watching tv didn't realize he was still in feeding mode and because I wasn't feeding him enough he was still wanting to eat and the rest is history

I thought that SAME thing about mine, too. And then I got tagged ;) and yes... My Boas, even as four and five (and my 8 footer) all produce way worse bites. Even my youngins.

Havent had alot of free time latly my 2 yr old human has been sick just wanted to let u guys know bo my ball is doing great I changed the bedding to newspaper and I am now feeding him three mice at a time and he has not been agressive at all thank u all so much I wish I was more educated about snakes so I could be more active in these threads I love reading them though yall all know so much bo is shedding right now and not as easily as before do u think that could be due to the change in bedding just curious

Just raise the humidity. My snakes always shed fine on newspaper! To raise the humidity, spray his cage down with water. I spray either 8-16 sprays or until two walls are covered in droplets. No specific reason, just seems to work good like that (for me, anyways)

Thanks thats what I was thinking and thats what I have been doing im sure he will be fine just really like holding him but I have been trying to do it a little less skipping about two days in between just because I thought the holding everyday might be stressful everything has been working out so maybe im on the right track
ErikBush97
10-25-13, 01:28 AM
You probably shouldn't hold him at all when he sheds. Might be why he's having a bad shed. Doubt it, but it's possible

I held him today because my daughters been sick so I havebt held him in about four days thats how I noticed the sheeding it might be normal because I usually dont hold him while hes shedding I dont usually get to see it until hes already shed it sll and I pick it up out of the enclosure I think I might have just got a glimpse of the pre shed today which I dont udually see so tomorrow I should know more

Thanks for sharing the info on your snake. I have only had my snake 1 week, and the first feeding was done in a separate box because that's what I was told he was used to. When I opened the box to check on the status (f/t RAT gone, YES!) I could just see it in his eyes and movement that he was still looking to bite at something. At that time I wish I would have had another small rat but I did not. So rather than risk being bit, I got about 4 paper towels and gently draped them over him from behind to block his vision then scooped him up from behind and put him back in his tank and didn't bother him for a couple days. I'll be trying this again tonight if I decide not to try and just feed him in his tank instead.
On other days when I get him out to handle what I do is quietly and slowly reach for a part of his body away from his head and just stroke him for a minute or so then just gently and slowly start working my hand under a fat part of his body to lift him out. He will tense up with the first touch, but relaxes after a few strokes then seems to actually "lift" up and accept that I am reaching under him to get him out. If he's under a hide then I just smoothly lift it off of him, but for the most part I like to leave him alone if he's hiding.

You should invest in a snake hook there about 10$ it will help get the snake out of enclosure without having took reach in and grab him I'm a newbi but that's what these members here told me to do they said snake might feel frightened just reaching in and grabbing him but use the snake hook to get him out then lay him on ur other arm or sit and lay him on you leg
