View Full Version : "They'll get hungry and eat F/T"?

All of my snakes take F/T without an issue (knock on wood!) Besides my adult, 8' Dumeril's. She has been fed live her whole life by her previous owner. I just bought $109 dollars worth of F/T for her so it's a pretty big deal that I get her on F/T. I spent all my own eating money on her and my other snakes. Lol. She's eaten two lives rats, NO PROBLEM . I try F/T last Thursday, she struck it, I checked on her an hour later, she had let go and lost interest... I tried again, heated up the rat in hot water, she struck missed, and didn't try again... Left it in over night. No luck. I shouldn't be posting this yet since it's only been one failed F/T feeding, but if she doesn't eat F/T, how can I get her on F/T? Should I wave a live rat in front of her, and then put a F/T rat in front of her to trick her into eating the F/T rat? Or as some people say "eventually they'll get hungry and eat F/T." Should I just keep trying until she takes F/T? I really really really don't want to continue feeding live. I'm an animal lover, furry or scaley, so I really want to avoid feeding live...

Try feeding a live rat first and then offer her a F/T, right after she finishes eating the live rat, while she is still in a feeding mode.

The rodents are suppose to be gassed with CO2. Other methods are snapping the neck. People feed F/T, because it is safer, cheaper and you can store large amounts of them in your freezer.
