View Full Version : Dumeril's has a scab?

Hi. My Dumeril's had a little scab on her nose which I thought was from the previous owner feeding live. That's what he said the scab was, and what a few others thought as well. Yesterday I checked on her, and it looks like flesh is exposed/her scab came off. HOWEVER, i t was almost 100% gone, and I don't even think it could come off at this point.. I thought maybe it was some sort of infection because like I said... It had basically gone away before today. I'll get pictures upon request.
Sounds like your Dum rubs his/her nose in your enclosure. Pics will help to figure this out though :)

I've seen rubs that high up but I'm not so sure.

could be a wound from a live feeding perhaps.
I've had a bp have some rubbing at the top of their head, tried squeezing it's head between the lid and the tub....hasn't happened since but it seems like the most likely cause. You can use a generic brand of triple antibiotic ointment to help it heal daily if it gets worse. After each shed it should improve no problem.

Ssd cream will also work (silver sulfadiazene), but neither will do much good unless you can determine how she is getting the lesion/how it is getting worse, amd then remove the cage furniture or whatever that she is rubbing against. Has it changed at all with her shedding?

double (triple) check all your parameters, try to find out if there is a reason she is rubbing. check out the 'blood python missing head scales' thread, they were having a similar issue; i think it was a design flaw of the tub that the snake could stick his head up under the lip or something.
You need to do more than just treat the rub, you need to find out why the snake is doing it and get her to stop. maybe its too hot/cold, maybe she doesnt feel secure, etc etc etc

She's so big that her 'butt' doesn't fit in her hides. Maybe she needs more secure hides. It's been very challenging to find hides for an 8 foot snake, so far, though.

You can make your own with wood or plastic. just get sheets and screw them to make a box with no bottom. Then you just cut an entrance hole.

Actualyl how much floor space does she cover when coiled up?
you can order XL to Jumbo hides here

I'm not 100% sure how much floor space she takes... I'd say approx 24"?
I'll measure her later today.

24 by 24? That's huge. Might not fit in that jumbo hide then.

I'm thinking 24" x 12" because of the way she lays.
nose rubs will swell and fill with fluid. The boa puts pressure on the tip in efforts to escape. sometimes it will scab or open up at the top from the pressure, the scab isnt necessarily going to be the exact location the animal was pushing their nose. a triple antibiotic is what I like to use and of course to find the reason for the anxiousness

She's stopped rubbing. I set up a camera facing her T8 enclosure and she hasn't pushed since I last posted in this thread. I started putting triple antibiotic ointment without pain reliever in it, as suggested and I think the ointment irritates her when it's touched. Because she gets pissy if I touch the scab after I put the ointment on, but that's a great thing because I figured out why that scabs there... she pushed her head in the glass of her old enclosure and actually ripped the scale off there. So she's not trying to put her head in the glass anymore because touching the missing scale with ointment on it hurts. Sad that it hurts her, but if that's what it takes for her not to rub then whatever.

I use cat litter boxes. Just cut a hole in one end and flip over. At Wal Mart you can get different size litter boxes. Heck that's what i also use for water bowls for my bigger snakes like my anaconda.

I checked at my local Walmart already and they only had one cat litter box, which was flimsy and small. :/

I use this for water bowls. cat litter box - Walmart.com (http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?tab_value=all&search_query=cat+litter+box&search_constraint=5440&Find=Find&pref_store=1713&ss=false&ic=16_64&)
You can also use totes as hide.

Yeah, our Walmart doesn't have any of that :/ I'll just try to find some big enough totes. It's hard trying to find a hide big enough for the snake, and small enough to fit in her T8

You can also check like Dollar store's, Kmart, Home Depot, or Lowe's they all carry totes.

So her little nose rub thing is yellow and gooey. :( I'm going to wait for a few weeks... Of it gets worse, we'll go to the vet. If it heals, great. Putting triple antibiotic, without pain reliever on it once a day.
