I'd pretty much given up hope that my big eyelash female Circe, bred back in March, would drop babies. She hadn't seemed to be getting any larger in the last two months, so I figured it was a lost cause. Yesterday, I got home late after a heck of a Murphy's law sort of day....and when I went to turn the lights off in my viper room, I didn't see Circe in her usual spot. I walked over and noticed she was down low in the foliage on the ground...then I caught movement out of the corner of my eye...BABIES! I noticed a few, then a few more....then more and more.
Final count was 18 healthy, cranky baby fang faces! I am ecstatic and almost giddy. They're so tiny and adorable...little tiny mouths gaping at me, little tails drumming, little tiny strikes! <3/

I can't wait to get these little guys eating and off to new homes. I'm probably going to keep one or two for myself.

Here they are:

Thanks guys! I'm very thrilled to finally have these little ones alive and well. There are a few that are oddly colored that I might hold onto. :)

This is so cool. I don't even have words for it. These snakes have to be one of my top 5 hots. Probably never own one, or a hot for that matter, but I love seeing these guys. Please keep us up to date as they grow! Congratulations, and thank you so much for sharing!

I'd just misted down the container before we put them in there. Those two were tangled up, so setting them down in the Kritter Keeper was the best way to get them to go their separate ways. I think that because they were still sticky from just being born and the container was wet, he got some traction. He did not get far, but it did look pretty cool.

They're all doing well still. A few are looking like they're going into their first shed already. :) I can't wait to see their colors once they've shed out!

Hahah, thanks. They are little demons....some of them rear up and gape their tiny mouths as soon as I open their lids! It's precious....so darned cute! I'm happy when they threaten and strike at me- it means they are healthy and lively. I'm going to let them shed out and then get a few meals in them, and they'll be ready for sale to new homes. :)

What are they exactly?

congrats on the little demons

What are they exactly?

Eyelash pit vipers, more specifically a crotalid related to rattle snakes, copperheads, water moccasins, fer de lance, etc...

Gorgeous babies, I've always wanted an eyelash. I got a T. Albolabris for my first hot as a sort of easing myself into working with a venomous on a daily basis. It's been 2 years not so much as a sketchy moment(amazing what proper handeling techniques can do, lol). I'm going to breed my female before i decide to get any more hots so I've got the feel for every aspect of care. Cant wait to see the same sight in my enclosure, I'm so jealous.

Thanks guys. Sublimeballs, C. albolabris are great pit vipers too...I actually don't have any yet, but hope to get some going soon. I noticed you called it "T." for Trimeresurus...do you know if they actually put Cryptelytrops back into Trimeresurus? There was talk of reworking the taxonomy and putting a lot of the smaller genera of pit vipers (Cryptelytrops, Viridovipera, Popeia) back into Trimeresurus, but I never heard the actual outcome. Personally, I think the face shapes are different enough to warrant them staying separate...but that's just my opinion.

I'd love to see some pictures of your albolabris...and can't wait to see you producing some adorable little death worms!

Ill have to post some pics at some point. I haven't posted any pics of any of my collection yet, every time I go to take pics I end up finding a cage that needs cleaned and put it off. Last I heard they were classified under trimeresurus. They are great little pit vipers I almost got a wagleri but I'm glad I went with the albolabris. Oh and you can call me Gage.

Wagleri are amazing snakes- absolutely stunning, very docile and impressive. Unfortunately, they all seem to go downhill in captivity after about 2 years and die. There's a lot of debate right now about whether it's more environmental or diet-based, but the latest study seems to suggest it might be related to a captive diet. A scientist in Malaysia collected deceased Wagleri and also induced regurgitation in others (I think a total of about 120 specimens) and found nothing but frog matter in their stomachs. He also necropsied dead captive specimens and found evidence of fatty liver and kidney failure. This would suggest that a diet of low-moisture, fatty rodents is slowly taxing their kidneys and liver. Thus the snakes appear to do well for a few years, then when the damage to their organs reaches critical load, they just spiral downhill and die. It's so sad- they are soo soo beautiful. If I ever have the opportunity to own some again, I will try maintaining them on a frog-only diet and hope they do well.

Update- 14 of the 18 babies have fed and some have taken a second meal already! :) They are doing great. They're all such cute little buggers. I'm confident that the remaining few will eat next time I offer food. They all struck and bit, just didn't actually hold onto the food.

I agree completely with you willow on wagleris beauty. Definitely one of my favorite crotalids. My reasons for getting the albolabris instead were they aren't know for the health issues, or the hydration/drinking problems. And the white lips I found were CBB and the only temples I found were WC and didn't look great. Plus you really cant go wrong with a solid green pit viper. So did you lose your temple recently?, I saw pics of one in the HOT feeding thread. For the same of hot keepers test out the frog diet theory, I'd love a wagleri.

Congrats on getting the 14 to eat, always feels good when a babie takes its firat meal. As for the other 4 I'm sure it's just a matter of time. Do you feed them off hemostats/tongs? If so try giving the pinkie(assuming that you're feeding pinkie halves or wholes) a little wiggle/struggle when they bite might be enough to get them to hold on. Good luck with them, have you picked out which ones you want to keep?
