So my step son out to visited and wanted to check out my snakes. Not thinking it's around the time i would feed at night. So Chris don't really care to hold snakes but like looking at them. He want to check out the Black Bloods. While we were in the snake room i popped the lid on a couple cages and show him some of my other snakes. Now note they all just ate Saturday but yet some kind of acted like they were in feed mode.

Not thinking and making a rookie mistake i went to show him my most beautiful snake of all my Jungle x Jag Carpet. This snake by far as the most intense feed mode. As soon as i cracked the lid a inch he shots out over two feet and just nipped my nose. Luck for me but not so lucky for him when i jumped back i drop the lid on him. If not for the lid i would have taking a it full on to my nose. This is why you should never do things out of routine. I never mess with my snakes after 3:00 pm and always feed around 5:00 pm i so should have known better. As for my Jungle x jag he fine just a little pissed off.

What gets me is he had just ate the biggest meal he ever had on Saturday. Still can't believe i made such a careless mistake.

I don't think that was that bad of a mistake Chuck. Almost a week after feeding a huge meal. I would have done the same or at least not given a second thought to opening the viv anyway. Don't beat yourself up about it.

I know i should beat myself up but because of me he got a lid dropped on his head. Poor guy.

I actually try to completely avoid any routine with my snakes for this reason. I know that is not "by the book" but that is just how I feel most comfortable approaching my collection.
I am glad your jag male is alright chuck, your heart must have skipped when you watched the top drop on him.

Yeah my heart jump to the back of my throat. With snakes like my Yellow Anaconda and Blood pythons i learn you want a routine or you will get nailed every time.

I've had a jag latch onto my nose, she held on to my face for about 5 minutes before I decided I needed alcohol or she was gonna rip my nose apart. After all was said and done, she got a nice big rat, as she was clearly telling me something! Good thing it wasn't one of my bloods though, I probably wouldn't have a nose, or eyes lol. Glad you got away in time, not fun having a snake stuck to your head :D

Help a no0b out... What was the horrible mistake here? I handle my carpets anytime, day or night, unless they're hiding (rare) or in blue. Also, my guys only get 24 hours off after eating and I've never witnessed a feed response or regurgitation. OP waited like five days, right?

Maybe it depends on the individual snake.

Snakes vary just like people. His has a great feeding response. My jampea retic lounged a good 3 feet out of her cage about 2 hours ago when I opened her cage up for misting; even with a belly buldge from a jumbo rat 2 days ago.

He was amazed at it's speed and thought it was scary but funny at the same time.

This snake has the most insane feeding response of all my snakes. Each snake is different and some you just have to use more caution with.

I have this happen a few times with my Carpets and twice with my Yellow Anaconda.

My retic is my crazy feeder of my collection. My carpet is an incredible feeder, but not at all aggersive about it. my yellow annie is a little piggie but he never has had a over the top reaction to food, but always looks right at me when I pass his cage; giving me that look of "FOOD?!".

My Bloods and Anaconda both hit harder than any of my other snakes but the Carpets hit twice as fast.

I used to have bloods(really wish i hadnt sold them now). my big male would hit rabbits like they insulted his mother, and my big female would not strike just gently grab them off the hemostats, not constrict, and start eating. I miss owning bloods but I've fallen in love with pure dwarf and super dwarf retics. So that's where my snake savings are going for now(when they have built up enough). Come spring though ill have some balls to sell, so maybe ill pick some up. Your black blood is beautiful by the way chuck.

My carpet pushes her nose into the fur by their heads, and just slowly opens her mouth and eats them. She's so cute. It's like she likes the feeling of the rats fur.
