Hello. My name is Nate, I'm Canadian and I'm about to be a new Corn snake owner. The snake, the tank and necessities were suddenly given to me by a friend because she couldn't take care of it and had no where else to go.

The snake is about 2 years old and a little less than 5 feet long.

I have never owned any reptile before in my life but have always been interested in any and all reptiles. I know this may be a daunting task for me to take on suddenly having no prior knowledge or experience but I have been reading a lot about the care of corn snakes and have a general idea.

The problem is I keep reading mix-matched information. So I thought I'd turn to experienced snake owners for some helpful advice before the snake becomes mine today in the afternoon.

Here are the details of what she is giving me:

30 gallon tank
1 hide
1 heating lamp(Over Tank)
1 Water bowl
15 gallon "feeder" tank

From what I've been reading this seems to be the bear minimum of what a corn snake should have to live. I have no idea if the snake is healthy or how she takes care of him but this is what I have.

I would like to know what you guys think of this setup, if I should get more things, what I should be doing differently ect ect. This would be very helpful to me, and I just want the snake to thrive and be as healthy and as happy as it can.

Thank you. I can also post this thread somewhere else other than the introductions.

Welcome to the forum :D I would add another hide and ditch the heat lamp in favor of an under tank heater (connected to a thermostat). Also you don't need to feed in a separate enclosure.

Welcome aboard. You've come to the right place! And ditto on everything sweatshirt said! ;)

Hello and welcome

Good advice from sweatshirt. A thermostat is required for whatever heat source you end up using. There is lots of good info in the corn snake section so have a good look around and ask any questions if your unsure about anything.

Thanks alot, turns out there is already an under tank heater as well that apparently was never used for the snake. I suppose I will start using it instead of the lamp. I picked up a probe thermometer today to stick on the wall on the hot side seems to be at 28 Celcius right now using the lamp. I think i will leave him for a bit before switching heat sources just so he doesnt get too stressed out, he went through a pretty big transition today.
