Im almost positive its a garter snake however I'd like to make sure and know what kind. Its small, making it harder to id.

I'm with Infernalis on this one. I believe it's a Garter snake. They come in a lot of different shades of from light grey to black.

wow.. I thought I taught you folks better than that here.

That is in no way close to resembling any Storeria species. Storeria dekayi & Storeria occipitomaculata are genetically similar, "cousins" if you will of Thamnophis, Both species are of the Natricine group of colubridae that deliver live young. The Natricine group includes Thamnophis, Storeria & Nerodia. (As well as Ribbon & Queen snakes)

For reference purpose... This is what a Dekayi snake looks like. (Boldface correct spelling)

Conveniently this guy was found at my work in Lancaster N.Y.

Any suggestions on caring for it? My better half wants to keep it :)
