put a deposit down on a CB13 hypo hogg today, culdnt resist :D lovely markings and color, picking him up next week - quick question, i'm finding conflicting ideas about basking temps, some saying 28C-30C and some saying upto 32-35C, any opinions on this?

also do they spend enough time climbing to make it worthwhile installing perch beams?

will post pics soon as I get him home end of next week :freakedout:

Awesome!! Looking forward to pics.

I don't want to give the wrong suggestions for a Hog, so I'll wait for someone with more experience to come along :P

I think 28-30c is the usually recommended temperature, but if my enclosures are big enough I provide hotter basking spots so they can choose.

For example in my old carpet python enclosure I provided temps up to 99F and he would use it after a meal, then after a day or so would move down to an area of 90F.

My bci have a hot spot between 93°f-95°f. I would also recommend a perch ad all of my boas ( even my 6.5' female ) love to climb.

Definitely something to climb on. Mine likes to cruise around and climb a lot.

formica I just realized that 30c was 86F. In that case I would give the latter as the hotspot. I give my boas hospots of around 90F, sometimes a little lower sometimes a little hotter depending on ambient air temperature.

ok kool, breeders recommendation is 30C aswell, I think i go with that while he's in quarantine in a tub, 35C(95F) will be a bit difficult to manage in a tub while the central heatings on here, will give him a hotter option in the display case when its built

have one more 2ft enclosure to build then I'll start on his, might do it 4x3x2, will see!

heres a pic of him (taken from the breeders website, AS Exotics), cant wait to take him home :D

wow nice find. Love the creamy background color.

Are you going to start a private business with your cages? Bet a lot of people would want to buy them.

init, loved the colors, Hogg wasnt top of my list till I spotted him! lol

Yeah I might sell some enclosures, all depends how well the next 2 builds go, no major issues have cropped up so far, and I could do with something to fill my time as winter is a very quiet time in my industry - i used to sell formicariums for tropical ant species (along with ant colonies), def a good way to keep me out of trouble :D

Very very nice. I am curious as to what the difference between a hogg island boa and a hypo hogg island boad were? I thought (for some reason) that all hogg island boas had that "hypo" effect.

He's a Hogg (Pure) X BCI (Sunrise), called Hypo-Hogg aka Het Sunrise, my understanding (which is basic and may not be right) is that Hypo Hogg indicates Hogg dominant genetics, and Het Sunrise means his BCI-Sunrise genetics are recessive?

His others where called Hogg Crosses, they where not orange, except the tail markings (but darker), they look much more like a standard BCI, and allot more speckled

turns out thats not what it means at all..."reduced black", he's certainly got allot less black than his others, and right now his speckles have dissappered (almost) completly n he's glowing orange :) still to grumpy tho, so pics will come another day

further reading has uncovered that Hogg's are infact a natural Hypo, so maybe theres not actually any reason to call them a Hypo Hogg? mine is just a Hogg Het Sunset...i think? morphs confuse me. hes just orange! :D

Hog Island are locality boas which do have a naturally occurring light pigmentation. They are much smaller than regular bci's. Hypo is a morph of a bci. So, you are calling him a Hypo Hog because he is a cross between a Hog and a Hypo. He will probably be bigger than a regular Hog and have a lot more orange/pink than a pure Hog.

Ah, that is what I thought. Thank you for clearing that up for us.

Great looking guy formica, cannot wait to see some more/better pics. If I end up with a boa, it definitely will be a hoggie.

currently munching down his first rat fuzzy with me, hit it like a brick :) not a massive meal for his size tbh, he's a right chunky snake, think his next one will be a weaner (not bad going for a snake at only 4months old!)

still pretty hissy with me when i opened the enclosure, at least he was until he smelt the rat lol so i'm going to get a couple more rats into him before I start pestering him with handling and photos

thanks for the info Monikazema! yep is very orange allot of the time, bit more yellow the rest of the time, was told to expect him to get even more orange as he grows up

See my Hog is almost a year old and he is very long and thin, nowhere near eating even a rat pinky. But he is the coolest snake, always friendly, and happy to come out and explore. I am sure you two will make friends :)

nice, is that a pure hogg?

I wasnt expecting mine to be as big as he is, his heads about 2cm at the widest point, and the diameter of his body is bigger than that at its widest point, got some serious muscles too! great looking snake tho, hasnt tried to bite, just hissy, so yeah I recon we'll get along fine eventually :)

Yes, mine is a pure Hog Island from Vin Russo's line. Here is a picture for a comparison, the darker one is my common BCI about 4 months old, the lighter one is the Hog, almost a year old, so what you have is basically a cross between the two.

formica
10-10-13, 12:22 PM
great looking snakes :)

Yeah I read the breeders description wrong initially, it was a Hypo Common mother, she's a beautiful orange color, and Hogg father, allot lighter than your Hogg, allot of very light grey, speckles and orange

Hogs go through different color phases, there is also a lot of variation in the pattern and amount of speckling. Mine is still young, it is more salmon orange and tan, I have seen some that are high yellow too. That's what is so cool about them, they change colors throughout the day too.

yeah i've noticed that, goes from yellow (caramel) to bright orange, its awsome :D

tried to take photo of him just now, he's back in orange mode, but damn he's grumpy lol gone back in the enclosure for a few more days

given him a name finally, Azacca :) Haitian name, didnt find any Guyanese names i liked, so Haitian will do!

after nearly 2 weeks of hissing and striking at the slightest movement/sound thru the plastic, i've decided that he doesnt like tubs at all, moved him into an old wooden enclosure early this morning, with coco husk and cork tubes instead of paper towel, seems much more relaxed now, been out exploring a few times without a single hiss or posture :) going to give him another 2 weeks and see if he's ready for some interaction and pics

Just get in there! I had the same problem with my male cay caulker. Came hissing in his unopened shipping box! I swear he was like the devil for the first few weeks biting everything that moved. I only let him settle enough to eat and then began handling him right away. Now he doesn't hiss or strike at all.

I gave him a month to settle in without handling, he's not calmed down even a little bit in the last 2 weeks with handling, its amusing tho, a baby snake trying to convince me he's a big scarey snake :) early days anyway

he does have some awsome colors, and constantly changing every time i see him, hoping to catch him for pics in orange mode, with less speckles, and yellow mode with lots of speckles too soon

Yes but the scary thing is imagining him acting like that when he's full grown. Not going to lie I am a bit worried about my hatchling jcp carrying this behavior into adultgood.

Very nice pick up mate! Absolutely stunning little hog...

The first hoggs in the hobby were apparently heavily speckled, we've selectively bred them to be cleaner and brighter to the point they no longer look like the wild hoggs.

cheers guys :)

he's allot more speckled sometimes, when he's yellow mode, which isnt that often, his dads very speckly, and his mum a sunglow; great combination result i think! Looking forward to finding him an interesting female over the next few years
