Monday's babies Harriet x Ozzy. A repeat of a 2010 pairing that produced some amazing striped animals. Part of my "Picasso" stripe line. 13 babies and some with super intense striping / aberrancies. Found mom after the first baby was delivered but she did not seem to like me there so I left her alone and checked back from time to time. Took a couple hours to deliver the whole group. Very large, healthy full term babies at two days past due date.

Really liking the striping down the back, very cool! Do you have any pics of any older animals with the striping?

Sweet looking bunch. How many did you end up with.

Very nice! I notice she started giving birth in the water bowl. That has been something I've wondered about for awhile.
It's recommended to remove large water bowls from egg laying female snakes enclosures to keep them from laying their eggs in the water and drowning the embryos. Does that ever happen with live bearers?

Well, live bearers basically hatch at birth. They instinctively go up for air so as long as the water is not deep they are fine. Another key issue is traction. With glass bowls and water they are slippery already. Add in some baby slime and they are slicker than whale snot on teflon. To fix that I use inverted clay saucers in the water bowls as the females get close. Plenty for a little baby to push against and get out when they are ready.

In the past I found a water bowl with a bunch of wriggling babies trying desperately to get out and getting nowhere. Funny thing is individual babies will float in their water bowl using their bodies as a raft for their head.

That makes sense ...
