You should dig up his article on V.keithhorni, super great read. Sad that people only know him from his goofball T.V show and not his genuine contributions to herpetoculture.
I've got a nice personal file of letters back and forth between Steve and Mark Bayless, really neat stuff, plus a whole album of original pictures of wild monitors taken by Steve out bush, with his handwritten explanations on the back. I'll try and post a few up if I get time.

I had to rethink my stance a bit, I used to slam on Steve for his show, without thinking of how many young people got into reptiles because of him.
Sir David Attenborough is the best wildlife presenter ever, but unfortunatly, he puts young people to sleep.

YOU have obviously never seen "Wild Cargo"!!!
Aurthur Jones makes Attenborough look like a pu$$%y :)
J/K (kinda) I like Attenborough too, ever seen the comparison of a BBC special with his voice over Vs. PBS with Oprah? So funny how stupid we allow ourselves to be.

I have seen the dub overs. Not for long though, I have so many David Attenborough BBC specials I forget all the titles, so when I see the same show broadcast here, I usually change the channel.
The fact that he has hung out with Diane Fossey & Jane Goodall (and a plethora of others) makes him legend in itself.
Heck, I recently watched a special called "Gorillas revisited with Sir David Attenborough", Immidiatly after, I was compelled to throw on the DVD for "Gorillas in the mist".

I do love Attenborough, and agree that he is the greatest right now but SERIOUSLY have you seen Wild Cargo!?
It's hard to find, I have some on V.H.S but Arthur Jones was the true pioneer of nature docudrama/wildlife ed films. Everybody copied him, notably Marlin Perkins, but everyone else too. If you don't know Arthur Jones, check him out, most famous for inventing the nautilus exercise machine and selling the company for millions but he was an early herper/wildlife filmer extraordinaire WAY back in the day and was no B.S. Hell you have to hand it to a guy who wrote a book titled "Younger Women, Faster airplanes, Bigger crocodiles"
AND seriously scared the s%$t out of David Letterman when he interviewed him. Wild Cargo. Find it :)

Steve was a great man. It's unfortunate how many people view him in a negative light... While their points on the show are not completely invalid, we have to remember that the show did exactly what it was intended to, in a way that most animal documentaries could never come close to. It sparked an interest and passion for wildlife, whereas if you showed a child an Attenborough film, they'd become bored and go to sleep. Steve's show was the biggest reason I have such an interest in reptiles and animals in general, and once that interest was sparked, I wanted to see anything animal-related, including the previously boring documentaries.

Steve was great for conservation/awareness and land locking... not so great if you wanted to keep reptiles though.

I'm a teenager and I agree that David Attenborough is the best wildlife presenter in the history of ever. Does anybody know WHY they chose Oprah to narrate American documentaries and stuff? That blows my mind.

Sadly it's not just that they have Oprah doing voice overs here in 'merica, they actually change the content to dumb it down, removing science and any mention of climate change. My guess is that they are scared of political backlash and they assume the American public is stupid......usually not an assumption that is too far off base.
