View Full Version : New addition, one I've wanted for a few years!

There is a Repticon in Utah this weekend and we decided to go to it today awhile ago. Incidentally, it was the worst Repticon I've been to, with only about 10 venders and if I never see another BP, crested gecko, red tail boa or leopard gecko, (listed by prevalence) I shall be very happy! (I'm being over dramatic but not by very much)

Anyway, Utah has a great online classifieds for Utah and the surrounding states but inevitably all the really interesting things are usually at least two and a half hours away from us. But I'd seen this ad for a GTP male that the owner wanted to sell because he had several and needed space for a different snake he had on the way and he was selling for a very good price. The ad was up for about a week and every few days the price would drop. Yesterday it dropped again and finally temptation won and I contacted him, especially since we already planned to be in the area the next day. So I got this neat little guy and his setup for an incredible deal! He is super tame so far. Took a few not great pictures before letting him chill out in peace.

He does have a little bit of a nose rub thing happening, any suggestions on what to do for that?

Beautiful GTP! Gotta love those craigslist deals ;)

As for the rubbing there isn't much you can do, pretty much just have to wait until he sheds and it will heal itself. :)

Yeah, last night before bed we checked on him and he was rubbing and pushing against the screen top of the cage, so we cut a piece of cardboard and covered about 3 quarters of the top with it from the inside. Hopefully that will help keep him from abrading his nose more.

Go to home depot or some place similar and have a piece of glass cut to fit the top and get rid of the screen all together. If you want, just have a few holes made in the glass for ventilation, but not many and preferably on the sides not the top.

GTPs aren't really known for being a species that rubs alot, maybe its too warm or not humid enough.

Thanks everyone! I've only seen him try and rub his nose once after we blocked the screen and he quit after a few seconds. His nose is already looking better and the viv has been maintaining a good temp gradient and humidity so far. Now I just hope he will eat for me! Going to offer for the first time sometime this weekend.

I'm not as good as my husband at taking through the glass pictures but he was positioned just right this morning, at the right angle, I was pretty sure I could get a decent picture. Took two decent ones and then played with them a bit, mostly just cropping them.
These are the cropped ones.

The setup he came with is adequate but eventually I will most likely move him over to a large Exo I have that currently has geckos in it. Want to plan out perches really well and everything first though.

Went by his viv about an hour ago and noticed that he had turned around facing the other way on his perch and had his head nestled in his coils in a neat way, so I couldn't resist snapping another shot of him today.

The delights of owning a male GTP ;)

Do males in particular have better feeding responses? Mine is a male and his feeding response is non existant lol. He grew up with food being left in the enclosure for 6 years.

I've only offered once so far, though he's about due for another attempt. Tried to do everything right, offered a F/T mouse off of tongs about an hour after it got dark, using only a small light in the room to be able to see what I was doing, even blow dried the mouse for a few seconds so that it would be good and hot but he stuck his head in his coils and clamped up like a oyster and hissed at me. So I left it in there overnight but he didn't touch it. I haven't seen him exhibit anything that looks like hunting behavior so far though, so maybe he's just not hungry?!
I was told that he's eaten both F/T and live, so hopefully he won't have any problems taking F/T. Live is a major pain!

It could be he's still getting used to his environment. I've had snakes that took up to a month or few months to get started on eating(ball pythons/carpet pythons in particular).

he certainly looks a little grumpier than the Iroh i know ;) hopefully he was just reluctant to eat because of the shed, hes got to fill out quite a bit to live up to his namesake heh heh

Well, Iroh has begun to live up to his name, LOL! He kept laying his head out on his perch in a cool way last night but every time I'd try to get a picture of him that way, he'd move into food begging position, even though he'd actually eaten a few hours earlier in the day. He constantly begs to be fed now.
