View Full Version : Husbandry :Dumeril's vs Redtails

I've been offered a very cheap Dumerils, and I am going to inspect the animals health, along with the others that were offered, before even considering it. They are in absolutely no hurry to sell him, and they asked how many reptiles I've owned, have I own Boas, etc, so they seem.to care about where he's going/his wellbeing, which is great. Do they have similar environmental needs to a Redtail? We are meeting on the 7th, and I am in NO hurry to buy another snake. I have always loved Dumerils, and that's the only reason I am even considering it. Thanks in advanced.

I would make sure you have a MINIMUM of 500$ saved for potential vet care for your CURRENT snakes, and an additional 200$ for habitat needs (thermostats, lights, temp guns, etc) in case anything of yours goes. on top of that, you'd need about 100$ to set up your new enclosure, added to the cost of the snake.
further, do you have means to quarantine your new snake? have you quarantines any of your other new snakes? quarantine means separate from EVERY other individual, not just keepin all your new snakes in one room and your old snakes in another.
I dont think you will find anyone telling you to GO GET THAT SNAKE(!!) if that is what you're looking for, but i would make sure at a minimum you have the above covered.

i've not kept a dum, or even a boa, but im sure someone who has will assist you with that part shortly.

You don't even have thermostats for each of your current snakes. I would make sure the animals you have now are taken care of before acquiring a new animal that will get as big as your two bci, if not bigger.

It does not really matter what I think.

You haven't OWNED boas. You've had those snakes for a week tops. Honestly? you think you can go around saying "I have experience with boas, I own two!" I await the day when you come back saying you can't keep your animals because you have to go to college and you can take them with you and your parents wont look after them.

Stick with what you have for now, give them proper care and save some of your money for unexpected expenses. By acquiring so many in such a short period of time when you have little experience, by the time you realize you cannot keep that many, you will most likely already have some issues at the expense of your animals health. Don't get another snake.

Also, what do you mean you've been 'offered' a dumerils. I see a lot of new keepers using that phrase for when they found something they like locally and want an excuse to get it so they say the keeper offered it to him. I've been keeping reptiles for a lot longer than you have, and I have to say, only a few times have I been 'offered' a reptile by someone I don't know.

Adding to what other's have already said, you will be much happier by fulfilling the needs of fewer animals and seeing them thrive instead of hoarding a bunch of animals in a short period of time and not having the appropriate husbandry practices in place.

Good point, man! I'll hold off for a little while until I have what I need for all my animals + another. Plus, I don't have a ton of experience with Boas yet, so that's another reason to wait.

If I bought both of my Boas with my money, how don't I own them? (I've had my first BCI for almost a month) also, I don't say I have experience. I know I dont! Lol and I start college this September. I already have that kind of stuff planned out. Thanks for the concern, though :) and I have decided to back off for financial reasons.

My friend said that another friend wanted to sell some of their Dumerils, and they told their friend about me and they asked if I would be interested in buying one because they're starting new projects, and need room.

In case anyone is wondering, Erik did get the dumerils. He made a facebook page about reptile awareness that was in his sig before he was banned and I joined it just for giggles. He posted pictures of the new snake to show off to the facebook world :P

Um.. excuse me, but some colleges allow pets in them, I will be bringing mine to college with me after I have graduated, both of them.

Do dorms even have enough space to house adult boas?

warehouse13fan

That depends on the dorm room size, they vary. My class took a field trip to the college near us and the dorm rooms looked large enough, then you have the ones only big enough to hold a mini fridge and two beds. Like I said, they vary.

Some kids get baller dorms with kitchens and bathrooms and a few bedrooms and what not. My buddies had one. Another friend had a dorm that was like a jail cell, cement walls and humid as all hell. That was the only time I've ever been in a typical dorm in 5 years of college haha

Well that should be interesting. Wanna start a pool to see how long it will be before he has to rehome everything?

Sweet we now have a fb page run by a bunch of kids that haven't a sweet clue what they are talking about! I can totally see how this is going to help the reptile community.

FYI Erik, your pastel salmon is not a redtail. As a matter of fact it probably isn't even a salmon as they're a specific blood line just like a lipstick albino is a specific bloodline.

Now he'll just keep them to try and prove a point even if it's at the animals expense.

ah... I see. I do not know why I bothered reading all of that lol, but I was surprised at the persistent patience of people continuing trying to help the belligerent kid. I think he is really really young (13, 14?) - nobody is perfect, hopefully he will learn and grow up. We have all had our "punk" moments
