View Full Version : How long do you all store your frozen feeders?

I want to get a general consensus for how long most of you store your frozen feeders. I'm especially curious to hear from those of you who buy online because of the substantial shipping costs. If you can save the shipping costs from buying at an expo or a trusted supplier that's nearby I can definitely see the advantages, unfortunately I don't have that option. Nevertheless, how long do you keep them in the freezer? It seems like (6) months is about the average from what I've heard so far but have any of you kept your feeders frozen for longer periods of time? For example buying a years worth of feeders online could cost me $120-$130 and a (6) month supply could cost me $100-$120 as the price of the food items is lower when you buy in larger quantities (i.e. (25) mice for $16.25 vs. $20 for (50) mice). Any thoughts? I have (2) kingsnakes btw.

I actually just bought a 5.3 cubic chest freezer because my wife got sick of finding rats in the freezer.

Yeah, my gf gives me a hard time too even though they only take up one shelf on the freezer door and they're triple wrapped in Ziploc bags and Tupperware containers. Looks like I'll have to buy a separate freezer soon too.

See, I made the mistake of trying to hide it from my wife. Stuffed them all in a bubba burger box. She generally does not like hamburgers. Well, one day she wanted a hamburger... she was a bit mad.

C'mon, who doesn't like a nice rat burger every once in awhile? LOL. Honesty is the best policy sir.

i buy my frozen prey every 3 to 4 months,i rotate it though.....

the most recent bought prey gets put to the back of the cue,so i use the older prey first

i have kept prey frozen for up to a year, then fed them to a snake without issues

cheers shaun

the only thing that would worry me about a years supply,is power cuts or a freezer break down, resulting in defrosting and ruining the prey

cheers shaun

That concerns me with the (6) month or (12) month supply. Considering the minimal price difference the financial loss wouldn't be very substantial but the quantity of food lost would be disappointing.

I should count myself lucky, I have a freezer under my covered patio.

I have keep them up to 5 month's no problem. I now have some many snakes that that eat larger ,XL, and 2XL i can only order 4 months worth at a time. And that comes in three big boxes which fill my freezer.
