So, I have a 2 foot jungle that I have been loosely feeding on a weekly basis. However, I was wondering if instead I should feed so many days after passing the meal. Also, she has been soaking in her water A LOT lately, is this an indicator of a problem? Also, if I'm feeding very large meals (relatively) weekly, would this be considered power feeding and could it cause health problems in the same way as power feeding. The reason I am asking this is her last meal was a large adult mouse, which is quite big for a 2 foot carpet. The reason I went with such a large meal was that my local pet shop was out of rat pups (her usual) and all smaller mice.

Even rat pups and small adult mice are too big for a two foot carpet python. My jungle is a little over 2 feet long and hopper mice leave bulges in his stomach.

Soaking in the bowl could be indicative of a few things. High temperatures, low humidity, mites. Or it could just be that he is soaking. What are the temperatures and humidity in the cage?

Only maybe for a Irain Jaya. I start all my Carpets on rats. At that size my Jungles, Bredli and Coastal all were taking rat pups or Fuzzies. Carpets are like Scrubs python in they can easily eat something 3 times their girth.

The soaking in the bowl could mean your snake is about to shed also. As for how often your feeding once a week is perfect for that size. If the lump takes more than three days to go down then maybe wait a extra day or two to feed again.

As above i fed my jungle prey that was three times his girth or more from a hatchling up to a year i fed every week then spaced it out to two-three weekly.

My IJ never touched a mouse and was on rat pups at the 2' mark.

At the OP. I feed my carpet based on her reactions. When she starts doing her "ready for food" routine, I'll wait a day or two then feed her. Sometimes its 6-7 days, sometimes 2 weeks. This is just my personal preference.

i feed carpets every 7 days until they are sub adults, then i feed larger prey less often

re soaking in the water bowl
check the tanks not too hot, also check for mites

get it onto rats straight away,as sometimes the older they get,the harder it is to cross them from mice to rats, and it takes an awefull lot of mice to feed an adult carpet mate

cheers shaun

how often would you feed a rat pup at 2 feet? I know carpets can take large prey items but isn't a rat pup too big for a weekly feeding regimen?

theres not much food in a rat pup, also they digest very quickly

imo you should be feeding a rat fuzzie/fluff or a small rat wiener every 7 days

a carpet will take prey 2,3,4 times their girth with no issues
