Just got the sony dsc-hx300 and I love it! Takes pretty good pics. Though I still have no clue on how to use it just yet lol. Here are a few that I shot.
Iguana eye. Couldnt get to close to her so I had to zoom in.

I've got the same camera. My only advice, is the more you zoom the blurrier images will get unless they're a few yards away. If you try to do macro shots with it, just get as close as possible.

Yeah thats what I was trying but my iguana is an *** and wouldnt let me get to close to her lol. What setting should I put it on for macros?

canon t5i. I wanted to get a maco lens with it but the lens is so expensive....atleast for me. I'll have to wait and save up. Does anyone know if maco-shots with just the basic lens will work?

Personally, I just leave it on intelligent auto. I'm also a very lazy photographer. I don't think about aperture or shutter speeds and exposure... I just let the camera do the work. The only time I switch things are when I shooting something specific, like fireworks, night pictures, or action pictures.

Is it considered cheating if I enhance the sharpness? lol

Its not a competition, you can't really cheat :P You can do whatever you want, so long as you don't post classifieds for sale claiming it looks just like the pics hahaha

The kit lens is an 18-55mm. That will work just fine. I used a 28-135mm and got some close shots, 18mm will allow you to get a little closer. (camera-Object)

Ah I see. I don't know what "x"mm - "y"mm stands for. So the lower the number the closer and the higher the number the further away you can take shots?

Im not familiar with your camera, So use this information at your disposal.
For macro shots, or closeups, etc, You can mess with your manual modes. A smaller aperture (Eg.Higher aperture number) will give a shallower depth of field (Where say your object is in focus, and anything beyond or infront of that is blurred). When you reduce your aperture you also need to compensate on the other side (Think algebra, Do something to one side, compensate at the other) i.e. Shutter speed/flash. You will need to reduce your shutter speed in order to capture enough light with a small aperture, or you will be under exposed. If its too slow, Over exposure. Mess with it and shoot shoot shoot, and see what kind of results you get and just tinker around till you see how your camera reacts/what works best for the given conditions.
Good luck!:D

The two numbers are the minimal and maximal focul range of that lens.. Not exactly how close/how far away you can be, But how close the lens can be while in focus. At least that is my interpretation.
Edit* from the trusty internet: I appear to be wrong I think.
What Does The MM Mean On A Lens?*by*Digital Photo Secrets (http://www.digital-photo-secrets.com/tip/215/what-does-the-mm-mean-on-a-lens/) Give it a quick read. See if you can make sense of it. I can't tell if I was correct or not. I think I had the idea a little off in my mind

That was confusing lol. What I'm getting from that is that less mm = allows you to take closer photos.

I think that is the common misconception. Basically, the smaller the first number the more wide-angle the lens is, zoomed all the way out. I wouldnt worry about it that much lol, The 18-55 will get the job done and you can get close shots, you may need to back up a little in some cases.
It isnt exactly correct, but just go by the Bold as a general rule

My first lesson in actual photography... and I understood 0% of it. O_O No, wait I understand what shutter speed is!! But that's it... I don't know how to change any of that stuff manually anyways... >_>

I have no idea what aperture or shutter speed is.

I think shutter speed is just that, the speed of the shutter. I THINK slower shutter speeds allow for more exporsure resulting in blurryness allowing for pictures like this http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w146/zrmg6/Poi.jpg

So basically shutter speed is how fast or slow the camera takes a picture?(receives light?)

Exactly.
The aperture is the size of the opening in the lens allowing light in. The smaller the opening, the less light. the bigger, the more light.

Poison, those are nice. I've realized two things...1) The Sony is on my short list (I'm getting a new camera for Christmas...I just need to decide on which one)...and 2) I really forgot how incredibly beautiful Tokays are and thinking I need to add one to my collection :)

Glad this got bumped, because I missed these. Very nice shots. I have the hx200 - I've been very satisfied with this camera!
