Hi, today i was making a basking platform out of aspen wood for my savannah monitor enclosure (which im in the middle of building). After i made the platform i put water based polyurethane on it. But then i was informed that it might be a problem to put the flood lights directly over the finished wood. Would this be a problem if i used that as the basking platform. Or if not could i just put a thin sheet of lauan plywood over it? (and obviuosly not put any finish on lauan). thanks

many forms of polyurethane are used in high temperature applications without any issue, what does the manufacturer say? what other chemicals are in the paint?

once the paint is cured, it's no different than direct sun exposure...

The manufacturer doesn't say anything about high temperatures and i can't find anywhere on the can where it says what other chemicals are used (o and i forgot to mention it's minwax polycrylic)

Awesome. Now i don't have to get a new piece of wood. Thanks!

Temp gun a patio deck during a summer day with no clouds or shade... heck just walk barefoot on one.

I know, people don't get what hot is....
Try walking barefoot on asphalt in summer at around 1:00pm. :)
Now, do that on the equator.. you will get blisters. Yet wild lizards are seen basking on this voluntarily.

I played soccer at 1 in the afternoon, in the middle of July in Egypt. The entire bottom of both feet turned into a giant blister and I couldnt walk for a few days until I popped them and wrapped em up. Pretty stupid of me, but gives you an idea of how hot it was.

The classic example of those temperatures is the mad dash across the hot pavement before jumping into a pool.
During the summer, this is my back porch.

I can walk on it, but only because I'm used to going barefoot when I walk the dogs or go running. The calluses on my feet form an insulating barrier, but I can only imagine how well a monitor's scales would work.

During the summer the conditions here are almost identical to what you would see in Ghana, ~95°F and anywhere from 70-90% humidity.
