Thank you , they are rare in pa and the rough green snake is endangered in pa so its one of the best finds we have had in many years we are still excited

I've been looking for these for 30 years and I've never seen one. I live in Ontario too. So far I've only seen garters, ribbons, dekays, redbellies, milks and ringneck.

For those looking for smooth greens just never give up. The first one i seen was when i was about 12 years old then nothing then all of sudden 3 in 2013. You just have to keep looking and have a little bit of luck

They are truly one of the harder snakes to find in pa. They are not very common and the color pattern and habitat they live in makes it that much harder to find. If i was you i'd try open fields the spring time

Oh that may be a problem. how about dirt roads?

sadly no.

i dream of dirt roads and big fields, a place where i can look out the back window and see deer.

if i came into alot of money, i swear; i'd get out of the city, and move far away to a small town where everyone knows eachother.

see, i live around philly.

i went for vacation up to wayne county, pa. and my fiance and i went to a little town, walked around and went to the cute little shops and what not. multiple people on the street actually said hi to us, and asked us how we were.

it was like night and day.

brandonh

Philly sure is a rough place to find herps. If you came into money you could own your own field on a dirt road where you could hunt herps :D lol. my town is about 10k population but there are lots of places in town and outside of town to hunt at so it is pretty nice.

oil city is west of scranton right? by quite a ways too! I'd like to either stay in pa and move up north, or move up to north ny, i've heard its all mountains.

how cold is it up there?

as a child, i would go searching for all types of critters.
on vacation with the family when i was around 10, i actually came across water mockisons. of course i didnt know what they were. me seeing them all i thought was "awwww" so i was picking them up, playing with em, and everything. my uncle stood there and watched. i brought one back to the cabin, and my mom flipped a diccck! dear lord, that woman said every curse word out there. needless to say, i wasnt allowed out of the cabin again unless my dad was with me.

In the summer it gets pretty hot up here. where did you go on vacation at ? that sounds pretty scary at least you didn't get tagged by one of them :). i actually went to virginia looking for water mocks no such luck. I am planning to search down in SC this summer maybe have some better luck

thats about the same as here.
haha i didnt think it was scary at all. i thought they were cute. only thing i thought was scary was when i saw one coiled up in the bush that was huge. it was thick and long and black. terrified me. the image is burned into my memory ahah. but there were a crap load of babies.
although my mom told the office about it, and i havent seen any since which sucks. but there's alot of other wild life.
i would go herp huntin for salamanders, frogs, lizards, toads, everything.
i even got my turtle from up there.
i go to keen lake. i go up every year...Keen Lake Resort Camping & Cottage Resort (http://www.keenlake.com/)
its gorgeous up there. i love it. its near paws and claws.
i highly recommend going up there.
you can find so much, even other snakes.
not sure what kind, but i know i stumbled across quite a few on my endeavors.

I think your snake may have been a hognose snake. water moocks ( cottonmouths ) are not native to pa. they are very thick and sometimes black in Pa. Thanks for the link it looks very beautiful up there. I'd love to hunt herps up in the poconos someday it would be a blast :)

I read somewhere that hognose's only get 2-3 feet. this thing was giant. I remember it being all black, pale chin, and belly.
it was terrifying. the babies were cute though.

and do hognoses like water? all the snakes were near the water, even the big one. the bush it was under was right next to the lake.

brandonh
12-29-13, 03:58 AM
This is true hognose snakes are usually at max in the range of 2-3 feet in length. Since It was a giant i doubt that it was a hognose snake now.

Were the babies black also?

In my experience i have found hognose snakes around lakes before but I don't believe that water is a requirement though.

they weren't aggressive either.

i really wish i new what they were. the options for large black thick snakes (native to pa ) are limited however that does not mean that it was a native snake this year alone a sand boa , corn snake and a western painted turtle were found in pa. In any case i'm glad they were not aggressive towards you and you got interested in herping :)

are there any large boa's or pythons that are black? could've been someone's pet who got lose and made babies.

and as for the turtle, i had a western painted! thats the kind i found in the lake. i named him rainbow (=

That is always a possibility white lipped pythons are known to be black sometimes. i Don't know anything about how big they get though. If it was a python i would not expect it to live through our winters. It is also possible that it was a large black racer although their young are not solid black when they hatch. Another species is the eastern ratsnake it can be pretty long here in Pa up to 8 feet long. Once again though the young are not solid black when they hatch.

What a aawesome name for a beautiful colored turtle!

just looked up pictures of the eastern rat snake, that's not the same thing as a black rat is it?

and thanks! ironically, my fiance's mother has a sun conure named rainbow too... but he's mean as a bat out of hell.

craap! i rescued a baby one from someone who was gonna throw him out on the side of the road, but i didnt think he would exceed 5 ft. *face palm*

and he's gorgeous! we had a female sun conure, but she passes about 1-2 months ago. she was severely disabled, both wings broken, feet broken, she had been attacked by the senagel. but she still lived for years. i guess she died of old age. she was sweet.
she was how my fiance got me to trust a bird, she couldnt bite hard.

glad you rescued a snake that was going to be ditched along a road. That is a terrible way to handle a pet that is not wanted so it is nice to always see someone take one in. lol I am sure you are not the first that has thought that about eastern rats. For the longest time i didn't realize that black racers got up to around 60 inches.

i am sorry t hear about your bird. I bet she was happy them years with you. im not sure i trust those type of birds with them sharp beaks lol give me a snake anyday lol

its funny, he's growing like a weed. within the two months we've had him, he's grown probably 5 inches. My little baby is growing up *tear* haha. he's almost as long as turbine, my texas, in length. but she's thick. when we got him, he was about 13 inches and very skinny. i want to say he's around 18-19 inches now, and im fattening him up. (;
i can't wait to order my gram scale so i can keep track of their weight.

i think i actually will be pretty happy if he reaches that 8 ft mark. i've always wanted a bigger snake, but not one thats so big it can kill me.

oh they grow up so fast don't they? Sounds like you are doing a wonderful job at keeping your snakes happy :) It would be interesting to see how much they weigh.

Then everything worked out great for you then although i must warn you as they get older the growing process does slow down a little so it will take some time to get to 8 foot lol

haha they do! little bugger eats without a problem, even when hes shedding. he's a garbage disposal. turbine on the other hand isn't. have to have her in a seprete enclosure covered with a blanket, if not she wont eat.
& thanks! i cant wait to get the scale, have to wait till monday to deposit my money, then im ordering it :D

& oh god, i hope it takes him awhile. i love how he slithers through my fingers. so cute.

haha at first i named him something really stupid, i think it was like jose or billy or something really dumb. i wasnt planning on keeping him, so i didnt care. but then when i took him back to the house, i started to play with him, i looked at my fiance all puppy eyed and was like "baby, i need a fwend" so then i needed to give him a real name. and we had just watched the movie turbo, the one with the fast snail, and well.. he's fast, so we named him turbo.

They're both great! he'll curl in my fingers and be stationary while im on the laptop or watching tv. and he'll stay like that for quite a while.
turbine on the other hand is just go go go go go. she will sometimes be stationary, but alot of the time she's on the move. expect in the enclosure, she'll tunnel.
turbo will tunnel but also cruise. which i love, bc i watch him when im tryinh to fall asleep.
im actually surprised he's still tunneled.

wait to he is the size and curls up on your arm instead of finders lol it kinda gets heavy after awhile lol. Turbine sounds like my lizard just wants to run all over the place and explore places lol. I love to watch reptiles they are very entertaining just doing whatever comes natural to them.

point blank, she has to like me! haha, she was an early xmas present :P
hes terrified to hold her, he doesnt want to get bit.
she bit me i think once or maybe twice the day we got her.
she was in blue, so im going to assume she couldnt see. nor was she used to my scent.
it didnt hurt, actually, i barely felt it.

lol not sure it works that way :).

maybe she knows he is terrified and that makes her uneasy? I am not sure if this is true or not it's just a theory.
snakes can be more aggressive in the preshed mode with the cloudy eyes and possible that she was also not use to being handled yet at the same time

if you take away the negativity, it would be perfect!

I personally have not had a problem with anyone on here before but in my opinion i think sometimes ppl just get caught up in the debate on the topic

haha it is simply amazing how a snake can disappear into almost nothing at all .
even as little as a clump of grass. there is a bike trail here and in the summer days we find 30+ snakes in 4 hrs its amazing how many ppl walk past them not even noticing them laying there which i don't think is a bad thing for the snakes.

thats pretty cool!
i remember walking the canal near my old house, and seeing a 6ft snake black rat snake. scared the crap outta me, didnt know what it was at first. it rattld its tail in the leaves (turbine did this when we first got her, i thought it was adorable) trying to be a rattlesnake :P

i want her to not be nippy. when she gets big, i cant have her biting whoever she thinks looks tasty :P

Yeah me too!! lol

right you start to panic and going crazy then oh there you are lol
sometimes i think the babies are just fearless at times lol
but then again in the wild sometimes you have to be to survive and you have to know when to run and hide and how to bluff your way out of danger all at the same time.
I agree or your fiance will never hold her if she bites him :) lol

haha sweet! made a friend!

haha she does, turbo's just chill.
he'll hold turbo.
funny thing about turbo is, when we got him, the guy said he was vicious and bit everyone.
i was nervous to hold him at first, so i made my fiance.
turbo has yet to bit us.
very laid back.
Turbo's more his then he is mine.... even though im thr one who takes care of them :P

and yes! see, i have this thing where if i see an animal that needs a home, or is hurt, i have to help it. kinda a habit.

it's gotten me into a lot of trouble, numerous occasions.
i have this tendency to save kittens, and i've almost gotten kicked out, not once, but twice because i bring in a flea covered stray kitten from outside.
opps. its just so cute and fluffy.

nothing is better then making a new friend :)

sounds like that guy just needed a reason to get rid of it
I think he will find that turbine is just as friendly if he gives her a chance lol

nothing wrong with that they are very lucky to have someone like you to give them a nice home and a warm place to sleep and a full belly every day and night.

this is true!

probably, he said he drove down 45 minutes to see if they would take it. when they said no, he said he would dump him on the road.
im trying, so far, he pets her on the head.
im nervous that hes gonna hold her, she bites him, and he drops her.

this too is true! my newest addition is a 5-6 month old German shepherd- pit mix whose bad as helll. came from a high kill shelter in NC. hope for paws (you tube them, the videos make me cry haha) brought him up here to us.
he just got fixed two weeks ago. Xmas eve, i was holding him, when i out him down, he started air humping in circles. i was so confused, i thought i hurt him hahaha.

That it is !

yeah that would probably scare her to death to be dropped.
but he should be able to work his way up to holding her i think

aw i love shepherds they are gorgeous dogs and it is great you saved him :P
ahaha you would think that would be out of the question being fixed but i guess not
lol

yeah i know! the first day i had turbo, he slithered off my bed and on to the floor, but he was fine, actually ironically landed on a pillow which had fallen.

i want a pure breed gsd so badly, i have this weird obsession with any bully breed. whenever i go to the local pet shop, im in there for like an hour and a half playing with all the dogs.

There are several snakes that get over 3 ft in PA that are black with white-chins. Could have been a black rat, a Northern black racer or very well could have been an eastern hog [I have seen some big ones in the 4 foot range).

Or it could have been a melanistic mutation of another species. Some water snakes can get pretty dark.

Helps to have a field guide or dichotomous key of the area you are in.
