So currently I am using aspen bedding, which I am hoping to change to a soil type of substrate, any suggestions? Primarily I want it for the aesthetic purposes. Any kind of dark substrate would be nice, if anyone can give any recommendations I would appreciate it!

They make aspen in black if you want something dark in color. Doesn't bleed either. Shredded black eucalyptus is another good one and is naturally resistent to mites. I try to stay away from smaller particles like soil and sand that can get in their noses.

I second the cocohusk. I really like "kritters crumble". Comes in two grain sizes.

Would Coco husk be a substrate I can feed my snake in? I currently use a separate tub for feeding, but would like to keep feeding to in his cage if this is possible.

I've been thinking of switching from aspen too Cm. I like the thought of a darker or more natural looking substrate. The black aspen sounds nice. Is the cocohusk good for burrowing? I also know that it retains more humidity than aspen but that shouldn't be a problem for my kingsnakes should it? Can any of these substrate options be combined as a substrate mixture (i.e. top soil and aspen/cocohusk) Does cocohusk have to be replaced once monthly like I do with aspen bedding?

where do you get your kritters crumble? I can only ever find the fine grained stuff and I'd prefer the coarse.

I prefer Cyprus mulch. Its dark, fairly cheap and you can easily raise or lower humidity with it.

This is what I use for my boas and they do very well on it.
