So I was gone for a couple of days and just had my dad keep an eye on my Coastal, and I came back and the scales on her head and upper neck look dry? I dunno if that's the right word for it but around the scales it's greyish. Nowhere else on her is like that so i'm just wondering if maybe she is going into shed? I was told she isn't due for another shed for two more months but maybe that's wrong? Not quite sure...thanks in advance, guys..<3

Is her belly a pinkish color? Are here eyes at all cloudy? Maybe being a little more pissy than usual? Hiding more? Those are all signs that your animal is going to shed.

If she is shedding make sure to up humidity. Cheers

Can you explain (preferably with a picture) what you mean by "looks dry?"

It's hard to catch on pictures. Right now, her head is tucked away behind her hide. I think I need to bump up the humidity cuz she's always soaking in her water dish. But by dry I mean between each scale it's turning an ashy color. I'm taking her to the vet soon though as she has beginning stages of mouth rot! Glad I caught it early but yeah... I dunno it may be humidity. Her eyes aren't cloudy that I can tell. around her eyes it's also a bit grey. And I noticed her upper body actually is like her head just not as obvious.

What is the humidity in her cage?

Not sure, I'm gonna buy a humidity gauge soon but i have a big water dish (big enough for her to soak in with a lot of wiggle room) and not much else..I'm bad with humidity</3

I think the best thing you can do is take it to a vet.

Temp and humidity are the most important for shedding, digesting, and stopping sickness so you need to know they are correct.:)

Thanks :) i finally got a picture of her head so there it is! I really need to get her to a vet though. Still gonna be freaked out for about two more weeks. Getting her in on the 25th but oh well...better to get her in late rather than not at all. <3

Looks like mineral deposits from sitting in the bowl and using tap water. You'll See it a lot on snakes that soak.

I'm not expert on tap water, but doesn't it have chlorine? I think chlorine is bad for animals. I'm not sure but you might want to check that out.

Kera, that often happens to mine when they soak prior to shedding. After they shed, colors all good again.

i don't think so...I mean I've been drinking it all my life. It has a lot of iron in it, pretty sure there isn't chlorine. not 100% sure though!

Tap water is fine....your dogs and cats drink it...you drink it. Don't worry about tap water...

If your really worried about chlorine in your water, leaving it out in a bucket, preferably with an aquarium bubbler and you won't have any chlorine left in there the next day. Granted, thats alot of work for something which is unnecessary as MDT said. You can also check your state / towns chlorine PPM levels, my towns water is pretty clean, and chlorine levels are very low so I never bother to dechlorinate when setting up fish tanks and they do fine as well.

My dog and cat and no one else gets sick from our water so I won't bother too much

I have well water. I have mineral deposits in my toilettes, showers.

Does most ground water have chlorine?

Sorry for the derailment.

I don't think it has any chlorine. Its put in the water, not naturally occurring.

I did not know that.

I saw this in my carpet once. It went away after a shed. You could try a humid hide to see if it would prefer that over soaking, but I would get a good hygrometer first to check RH. If it's a buildup from the water, then it's more likely calcium.

Correct,
And salt and iron.

Tap water is OK for them as long as you're not in a high suffer area. (which you can generally smell in the water....stinks!)

I'll try the bucket thing! see if it gets rid of it. Or do you think using a brita water filter may clear it up? I just want her to look as pretty as I can get her! :3
