View Full Version : What husbandry mistakes irritate you the most?
I know I'm being kind of big headed, since I was taught how to take care of Bp's long before I had my own, but there are some husbandry mistakes that just irritate the heck out of me. :sorry: What gets on my nerves the most is when people don't know anything about the proper temp and humidity levels for their specific pet. I mean, is it too much to ask that people do a few minutes of research (that could potentially save them from HUNDREDS of dollars in vet bills)? Grrrr >:P

When people ruin a perfectly good cage, that's set up proper by putting a Ball Python in it. LOL

when people are irritated because someone doesn't know as much as they do about caring for reptiles...as if there was never a time in their lives that they didnt know anything about caring for reptiles :robo:

I accept all mistakes as "newbie" = big deal. It's the repeated mistakes when the person was informed that bug me.
Eg...my snake has mites....get PAM....I used mineral oil and killed the mites ....a few weeks later....my snake has mites again now what? = facepalm.

Or how about when that noob argues with you saying they know how to kill them because they got them all last time.

The biggest mistake I get frustrated at is when people make the initiative to ask for advice (assumingly with the intent to AVOIDING a husbandry mistake) then proceed to ignore all advice given and make the mistake anyway.

Ignorance - in thsi day and age with all the information that is online people should at keast have some basic knowledge of the animal they are getting.
Not putting a guard on a ceramic heat emitter, it's pretty obvious of the dangers after 10 minutes of plugging it it.

My vote is also seeking out advice, ignoring every last word of it, then seeking advice for the issues that could have been avoided by listening to the original advice given. Grr.
When someone lets a snake get into this state, gives it away, and says "oh yeah you might want to take it to the vet". :pissedoff:

Hahaha well played!
What irritates me the most is when somebody seeks advice for husbandry or a problem, and they get asinine answers from someone that has no clue what they are talking about but wants to chime in anyway.

Yes, he was referring to me. I got swept off-track. Back on the rails- Nothing irritates me more than a reptile in an enclosure that is grossly too small. I think this mistake exemplifies an utter disregard for the life a keeper has purchased the responsibility of. Like stated before by lankyrob, in this day an age- information is so easily accessible, yet people do still make mistakes (I being one of them) and even serious husbandry errors can be due to mis-information or lack of knowledge. However, there is no excuse for something along the lines of a 17" water monitor in a 20 gallon tank.

Nah. There were three other responses that had nothing to do with husbandry mistakes but were about people's ignorance and arrogance.

Well, generally the worst mistakes, IMO, ARE made because of ignorance and/or arrogance... so I find it totally acceptable to list ignorant or arrogant things people do. The question is kind of subjective and I personally answered it according to my perception. Different strokes for different folks and all that business. :)

Yes sir.... That!
A few months ago there was an individual who was feeding based on how soon her home grown feeders would get to size. (Likely there was only two or three breeders) After many advised that her animals condition was very likey due to under feeding the animal passed. (I feel like I'm getting upset again....grrrr):hmm::mad:

Not so much a mistake as apathy and cruelty, but I hate seeing neglected and underfed snakes. It really drives me nuts. Otherwise it doesn't bother me if someone makes a mistake, it happens.

I agree with Charles. If you get a reptile, or any pet, at least take the time and effort to take care of it. If you cant take care of it, find someone who can. The biggest mistake people make is getting an animal and then choosing not to care about it.

To me the mistake that drives me nuts is improper heating or humidity. Two of the most important thing for a reptile and so me people wait to they get the animal to figure out they don't have the proper temps and humidity. This is something that should have been do before getting a reptile.
