Hey, everyone. As I posted earlier, my friend had found an escapee corn snake, and brought it to my house. Everyone around here's like 'oh yeah! let's bring it to the weird kid who likes snakes!' lol So he's doing a lot better. He tried to tag me the first time I held him. poor thing was so scared... I just held him again to inspect his body for health issues. Mites, broken scales, scale rot etc, etc. He's 100% healthy as far as one could tell by looking at him. He was super calm when I handled him then. He wasn't still as a rock, as a scared snake might be, and he wasn't impossible to handle. He didn't strike at me, he was an angel! Anyways, the previous post was about housing, however, I 'googled'/'youtubed' for a minute and found the answers I needed. Now I decided I'd upload a few photos of the cute little guy! BTW... I do have one important question; He's about three feet, and he's around 6-7 oz. is that normal/healthy? I haven't even put five minutes into researching these guys before because I never thought I'd own one. Back to the purpose of the post... Here's a few photos of the beaut.

nice lookin corn, looks healthy to me, although kinda hard to tell from the fuzzy pics - needs a better place to hide than that red box tho, a card board box will do for now while u sort a better setup, something which provides a proper dark space thats nice and tight for him to curl up in

Thanks, man! I only have it like that for now. I am not moving anything for a few days because he/she's already pretty stressed. I don't even think he/she can fit into that red hide lol I am in the process of converting a dresser into a snake rack. I have showed a couple buddies with pro snake racks and they said the plastic utility shelf/dresser I have should be just fine to use as a rack. So I will try to get that set up, and move him into there along with my Ball Python.

Thanks, man! This is just temporary. I didn't know my friend was going to bring this little guy over here so I had no preparation. So once he's settled in, I am going to put him in a homemade snake rack (when it's ready). Btw there's another hide on the other side, and it's not see through like that red one.

He should be quarantined for a minimum of six months before being any where near your current snakes

I know. My Ball Python is in my living room, and he's in my room. So we're good. I am going to try and take him to the vet for a check up, so I know he's healthy, and safe... If I can afford it.

the red box isnt offering any security at all, and thats what he needs right now - you'll be suprised the tiny spaces a snake can squeeze itself into :) use something that isnt transparent, or fill the red box with shredded paper, anything to block out the light and fill the space a bit, to give him some security

Thanks again, man. He's got a white one that's not see through on the other side of the tank. I'll replace the red one tomorrow. It's 3:54 AM here so I don't really have the energy to find something else to use as a hide, right now lol

Nice snake.

I am going to. Again... I got this guy without notice and I'm trying to let him get used to his new environment, so I am not really changing anything for a day or two. I tried to feed him today and without any hesitation he struck, constricted, and ate a mouse. It was pretty awesome how he wasn't all scared like most new snakes.

It's going to be all the same whether you put in towel now or later. He will still need to get used to it. You wouldn't want him getting used to the glass and then suddenly switch to paper.

Glad he ate for you. It's always a relief when new snakes eat readily. It takes away the worry.

Yes it does lol and I am going to get some paper towels in there like right now. You've got a good point on letting him get used to glass and then switching. BTW I have Reptibark and paper towels.. which are better?

Paper towels are convenient. Repti-bark looks better.

I would use the reptibark but that's just me. Some people like paper towels better, I really like something a little more natural looking. It's not going to matter too much to the snake though, so whatever's easier for you! Use whichever one you like better.

I prefer paper towels with new arrivals, as if they arrived with a load of mites it will be apparent within a few hours.

In a pinch if you need a cheap hide, get a tub of Cool-Whip (or generic), move the product to another container, clean the tub, and cut a hole in the lid. Throw in some spaghnum moss and it's now a humid hide. I keep a few around since we seem to attract free snakes.

I have been saving all of my costco size containers for that reason. Hides are good to have in surplus.

Another good and cheap hide is a clay pot (you can buy them at Walmart) with a hole cut in the side (smooth the edges though so it doesn't harm your snake)

These plain ole cheapies that only cost a couple bucks:

I use these. I don't cut holes in em though. If you hit them just right, they split into 2 perfect halves, takes practice though lol

The pet store down the street sells HUGE bags for $20. Could I use Aspen for my BP, too? People recommended aspen for my Corn Snake, but I'd like to find a bedding that works for my BP and my CS.

I think it comes down to preference but if you want to keep a close eye for mites or feces I'd probably use towels or paper(When my snakes defecate in loose substrate like aspen or repti-bark it's hard to see the feces clearly if I ever need to examine it).

For cornsnakes I don't really like repti-bark because it's not as good for burrowing as aspen or cocohusk is. You can still use it with out problems but in my own experience my snakes burrow more on those beddings. It acts as a hide throughout the enclosure.

Just bought two small bags of Aspen for $8.99 a piece... Half a bag was enough for both enclosures! Watching the two of them borrow and play in it is the CUTEST THING EVER.

I would use paper towel for a couple of months because if parasites. I would also feed it a rat pup or weaned rat. As for hides if you lower the red hide by cutting the walls shorter it will be fine. Everyone says tubs act as hides because they're opaque so why wouldn't the red box work?

Can mites hide under scales or something? I checked him very thoroughly and another local reptile keeper inspected him as well and said he looked clean as far as he could tell by looking. He inspected the snake for a good five-ten minutes so he'd have found mites if they can't hide.

Mites actually burrow under the scales to feed. I would also keep it on paper towel because of internal parasites.

I wouldn't recommend letting anybody else handle your collection as that is the quickest way to allow disease into it.

I agree, unless they washed their hands thoroughly in front off you. I don'y let any little kids in family touch them and an adult I make wash. lol

I've held him (I always wash my hands before and after... even with my BP and I know he's clean.), my friend, Stormy, held him because he's the one who actually spotted and caught the snake, and one of other friends, James, who's also a reptile keeper. I made James wash his hands, but Stormy couldn't.. Unless he saw the snake, ran home, washed his hands, went back , and caught it LOL
I will put him back on paper towels, though, and see what happens. *crosses fingers* hope he's clean..
