View Full Version : Snake suggestions?

I'm still mulling over getting another snake. I really am not sure what I want though. I really want to consider all the options.
This is still a while down the road, as I have other financial issues to deal with at the moment, but I want to decide on a species then start reading up it ASAP.

What are some suggestions that fit my guidelines?

- Must be something handleable - not something really bitey/aggressive.
- Something that will go in a 34-ish qt tub (I have space for something that size)
- Not a python or boa
- Not overly expensive. Under $200.

I already know corn snake fits this description. What else?

I was bored so I played with the formatting a bit :D

I think Milk snakes would fit well. They may be a bit more on the flighty side of a corn snake , but honestly I find them way more appealing. A lot of the flighty-ness goes away with handling as well. Mine went from very flighty to mildly head shy in about a month. Milk snakes have quite a variety (Especailly Hondurans) and most of them go for less than $200.

I have mine in 66 qt. tub, and I'll probably have to upgrade him fairly soon. SO that may be a problem.

Lots of colubrids / small species to choose from. Kings, milks, corns, hognose, garters? , house snakes, mountain lions, parakeets, etc. etc.

Yeah but wouldn't I need bigger enclosures for them?

I really don't know much about colubrid keeping...yet.

I don't really have room or money to feed big snakes - so Hoggs, BCI's, Red Tails etc. are out of the picture for me I'm afraid. If I do get another boa or python some day it would probably be a carpet. That's about the biggest I want to go (at the moment anyway) Maybe a Spotted or Children's some day, but I can't find those here.

I'm still open but I'm really leaning towards colubrids at the moment.

At the moment I have a Rosy Boa and Ball Python. I really like that my BP and Rosy have completely different personalities. The Rosy is extremely curious and unusually comfortable with being held (I think he would tolerate being handled for hours, although I will not be testing that theory) and my BP is shy and very clingy, I don't handle him for very long usually.
Now I'm looking for a colubrid personality, something a little faster paced, etc. you know what I mean.

I really want a Thai Beauty Snake and an ATB some day, but I have no room for an arboreal enclosure in this apartment, that will be farrrrrrrrrr in the future.

MBK's look absolutely awesome, I have never seen one for sale here in Ontario though. I haven't really looked specifically for them, though, in the past.

I love 'all-black' snakes.

How are they for temperament, size, cost?

Since I am lazy I suggest you ask or pm MBKboy. He might now a few things ;)

typical kingsnake, less than 5 feet (most of the time about 4ish), can be food crazy, under 100$ depending on age and where you get it (expo will be cheaper, etc).
A king was my first snake and she is awesome, food crazy as mentioned but hook training really turned her around.

look into the whole lampropeltis group, they are all pretty similar in terms of care, but come in an insane amount of morphs and patterns, so you are sure to find something you like.

You could get an albino Nelson's milksnake if you want colorful, or you could try a king snake.

why not catch a snake native to ontario. i have a smooth green, a ringneck, and two redbelly snakes i caught in my back yard. google ontario snakes, and check which species you can keep.

I spoke with an expert at Reptilia about that. He told me the only native snakes not 'regulated' (for lack of a better word) are Eastern Garters, and ONLY Eastern Garters. He said they have to fight the government tooth and nail to keep any of the other native species at the zoo. Anyway, after some research I have decided to probably not get a garter at the moment.

I suggest you be extremely careful who you tell about keeping native snakes.

Anyway, still liking the MBK, but still researching. Wanna make sure I even like Kingsnake personalities first.

Also I am definitely interested in colour/pattern but I also want to make sure it's something with a personality I like.

Then I would say you should go to a reptile expo or somewhere where you can handle the animal before buying it.

You could choose to buy a snake because it's species is usually tame and then end up getting an aggressive individual.

What do you want anyways? Do you want an arboreal snake, aggressive snake, active snake..etc?

Like everyone else said, your tub is large enough for any number of colubrid species. Now, its just finding the snake with the right combination of good looks that appeal to you, and nice personality.

Thanks, so far I like the LOOKS of the Okeetee Corn morph and an MBK. I think I'm going to travel to a reptile store and ask if I can handle a King, Corn and Milk to see which I like the personality of best.

As for caging, for some reason I was under the impression that because they are more active than pythons & boas, colubrids needed more space. Glad to hear my tub size is sufficient.

OK, my question is: Why would you want to keep road kill? and Who would want to buy road kill?

I doubt he keeps roadkill. I think counting roadkill helps the MNR (Ministry of Natural Resources) estimate the snake population in certain areas.

You need particular permits to keep them.

You can't just collect native species for your own personal enjoyment. They need to be kept for a particular reason and no, "pet" or "breeding project" doesn't count.

Not near Ottawa, lol. Doesn't matter anyway, like I said in my original post I am not getting one yet, just wanted to start my research now. I won't be getting one for probably a few months at least.
