Snake Hook v.s. Snake Tongs

I am going field herping this summer down in North Carolina. I have been herping around my house for the past few years, but I am now looking to invest in a snake hook (or tongs). I am currently leaning toward a Midwest 40" snake hook, but I was wondering the opinions of some of the more experienced herpers here. Which do you prefer: snake hooks or snake tongs? Why? What brands/sizes would you recommend?

Honestly, when I go in the field, I carry both. I have a hook that will lift most rocks

and a set of "no-name" tongs that go w/ me. I've had these both since I was a teenager. They have served me well over the years.

When I go herping I use my homemade hook but if you plan on catching venomous species then you may want tongs to have more control over the animal.

I always used to drag my 40" grab tongs with me but found I never really needed or used them, just my hook. I've made a hook or two, but really like/recommend the kind made from a golf club...the shaft is sturdy but light and the grip is perfect. I bought mine but it's been so long I don't recall who I bought them from, sorry...(got two, one to carry, one for home) The downside of tongs is also the risk of accidentally putting too much pressure on a snake's neck...I know most of us would know better...but there's the "excitement" factor too.

I use tongs as a last resort. Tongs tend to aggravate snakes. A good hook is the best. Dealing with venomous snakes I use only Midwest equipment (tongs.com). They are made from light weight aircraft aluminum (very strong), with a titanium hook. It was designed and used by Mark O'shea.

I only use a hook, but I leave the hots alone except to tease them into place for photos.

Hooks... a mis-used tong break bones. Too much pressure or the snake suddenly jerking around and that's all that it takes to do permanent damage.
