Enclosures: Tub

Hello, everyone. After a couple members of SsnakeSs forums saying that they only mist their enclosure once a week, using tubs, I decided to switch.
So here's the new setup :) The last photo is a picture of the ventilation system... It's actually just a mesh drain blocker.. thingy that I bought.

Well your getting there. When using a tub you want a few holes in the side for venting and not a screen hole in the top. That is the issue with the glass enclosure you have. Heat collects moisture and rises to the top so if your vent is on top....out goes the moisture. But for a royal that is a big step in the right dirrection. Now personaly I would get a bigger tub and use an old soldering iron to melt 5-10 holes in each side of the tub about 2-3" below the top lip. If you want to see the snake better cut a big rectangular hole in the side and cover it with plexi like a window.

Also adding a moist substrate like cypress or reptibark will help your tub out a lot. Hope it works for you and kudos for putting pride away and taking the advise given. Now get another snake for your glass enclosure ;)

Thanks, man! :) Even with that vent there, humidity is up and will be up for a while. The whole tub is fogged up, so I think I'm good for now! I personally didn't mind misting every 30 minutes, but when I get a job/a life LOL that's going to be a problem. Again, thanks for the reply! One more thing... What kind of snake would you recommend for a terrarium? One that's not going to need me to soak... or "mist" it every 10 seconds, if it's in glass? I really love your Jungle Carpet's by the way!

Why thanks. We love them too. Kings are great to have. Very fast ,active and deliberate snakes. Very exciting to keep. I keep mine in a critter keeper with no issues at all. Also a gopher ,bull or pine snake are a blast. They have a few display behaviors that make them one of my favorites. They hiss and rattle their tails but seldom strike and usually calm right down when handling. Actually there are tons of colubrids you could put in there. Find one you like the loon of that fits your desired size range. They will thrive in the glass tank.
Google images for kings. I think they have the most choices for colour and paterns. Start there :)

One question.. How hard is it to take care of a JCP? The type of tub I bought is 32 QT so I could probably buy another if that'd be suitable. Also, Thanks for all the info, I definitely think a Cali King would be cool, because they're native to California obviously, but they're also native to Oregon (That makes sense, right? lol) But it'd be easier to maintain the terrarium. That's the one thing I LOVE about my Garter, or any Native snakes, in that case. And I do have one SUPER NOOB question for you...
What exactly is are colubrids? I am just wondering how colubrids are different from a snake that's not in the colubrid family. Thanks :)

colubrids are kind of anything that ISNT a boa, python, or viper. Colubrid is a catch-all group for the 'other snakes'. Kings, corns, garters, milk snakes, bull snakes, gopher snakes, green snakes, etc are all colubrids. They tend to have lighter bodies and smaller heads than boas and pythons, and are more tolerant of lower humidities in most cases.
They are also my favorite group of snakes :)

It's not hard. They are great to keep. I have a Jungle and and Irian Jaya. Both are babies and great to handle. I always see mine perched somewhere so they make nice display animals as well.
