View Full Version : feeding
Ok so after over a week that i switched my little brb over to rat pinkys and he i went to feed him last night and he refused it. After he ate last week he stayed in his moss hide and wasnt as active as he had been. Is this normal? Also when should i try to feed again?

Wait a week to feed again. Have you changed anything in the tank?

You say that you switched him to rat pinkies, so what did you switch him from?
I've found that changing anything with snakes (even when it's necessary) can stress them out. If he is healthy and everything, you may just have to give him a little time. The good news is that he will probably get hungry again.
No i didnt change a single thing and fed the same way. And i switch him over from mouse pinky to rat and he took it fine the first time then i gave him 7 days and tried again and he wanted nothing to do with it.

Rats are a LITTLE more nutritious, he probably just isn't that hungry. I would wait 5-7 days and try again.
try giving it the rat warm and brained next time and I bet he will eat.
Boas and pythons like live food and can be finicky eaters at time. Warming it will give it the illusion of being alive and braining will help entice it with fresh blood scent.

Haha so glad that it was nothing serious! :p
Oh yeah hes great now! He was out and about last night!
Its interesting to see the differences between BRBs. After the shed, I bet your little guy will be pretty hungry.
My girl doesn't care, shed or not, she's a little pig and will not refuse food.

This was her pretty deep in blue as she chowed down on her second fuzzy (you can see the bulge from the first one pretty much under the still being eaten fuzzy).

Haha That's pretty cute. I'm still waiting for my lil guy to shed so I'm curious to see how he'll act during it.

Nataku is correct, feeding behavior during shed varies widely. Most of mine will take food, but I have a few that get finicky around that time....
Well he still hasnt taken yet its passed two weeks now...

Check your viv conditions again, just to be sure. If all is fine, wait another five to seven days and then offer again. Offer it piping hot and wiggled on tongs, timed at dusk (which is when these snakes are most active). Make sure all the room lights are out. If he grabs it, great; if not, just leave it overnight for him. Leave the room either way so he has privacy to eat. Good luck!!!
Thanks cliff im going to try again in a week. Thats been the way ive tried the last two time but no prevail! Now just a waiting game.

Maybe he just likes mice? I've had several do that, and it can be a battle to wean them. I have two right now whose rats I have to mouse-scent in order to get them to eat. I would try a f/t mouse before going live.
Well guys i can finally close this thread! My little guy finally ate!!!! Turns out that he prefers mice over rats...thanks a ton for all the help! Thanks a ton to you cliff for all the help too!

This doesn't surprise me. I had a similar issue with my new little guy. I found out mine doesn't like mice and will only eat rats.
Glade to hear its feeding again. :)

Yup, been there done that. Get a few meals in him so he has some reserves, then I'd recommend trying to slowly wean him over to rats by mouse-scenting them -- heavily at first, then less and less as time goes by. He'll need to be on rats by the time he's an adult, so might as well start the process sooner than later.
Good news, and good luck!
