View Full Version : spontaneous reproductive behavior in rosy boa?

Some of you may be familiar with my rosy, Neki.
She is at least 15 years old, and i've had her since November 2012. She had some issues with a tail abscess from a previous burn early this year, which is on its way to being resolved.
As far as i know, she has never been kept with a male, and never been bred.

My issue is this: today, when i had her out for a handling session, i noticed that starting at about half way down her body, there seemed to be several large (slightly smaller than a golfball) 'lumps', maybe 6? They are not visible externally, i only felt them on palpation. She gets fed 1 small mouse/week, and defecates regularly (i dont think the lumps are poops in the pipe). I guess she has spent more time on the warm end of her enclosure, but i hadnt given it any thought since i havnt handled her in a while.

Is it possible she could have a bunch of slugs? What could have caused her to produce them? Any advice? :P I've never bred snakes (yet), and dont know if i need to bump the heat or anything for her so she doesnt have any problems.
Thoughts?

I would get in contact with Warren Booth. He is deeply involved in asexual reproduction in reptiles.

"Slightly smaller than a golfball" sized lumps would be enormous lumps on even the largest rosy. I would recommend a trip to the vet ASAP.

i may be mistaken then in my comparison to a golfball then.... They are not visible externally, are difficult to palpate unless i describe in detail to another person, and place their hand directly where they are. They are not hard, just firm, and nearly impossible to feel if Neki is at all tensed. There has been little to no change since i first noticed them up to today.
upon reconsideration, i might describe them as slightly larger than a quarter in diameter? and still about 6 i can feel in a row, starting at her midbody.

have you bred rosy boas? have any of yours exhibited parthenogenesis/slugs without the presence of a male? When do gravid rosy's typically drop their clutch?

I do not believe there is any reason to take her to a vet right now. You can trust me when i say that i WILL take her to the vet if things start to look south (look at my post history, please), but also please have a little faith in my opinion. I am currently in vet-school to become an exotic-animal vet, and am confident in my abilities to 'see' a sick snake, and my snake is not sick (right now). I am continuing to monitor her closely.

As an update, she struck and constricted her mouse this week, but when i checked on her later she hadnt eaten it yet. This is not unusual for her, generally happens about once every 4-5 weeks (every 4-5 feedings). Her weight has stayed the same.

Starbuck, sorry for the delayed response. I have bred and have not witnessed slugs without a male introduction. That doesn't mean that I didn't just miss it though. It may well be that you are feeling unfertilized ova as that certainly happens with or without a male. I personally have never palpated for them so I can offer little insight to that. Six sounds about right though!
